Two people got me into magic. The first was my dad. He performed a classic cut and restored rope, and I was hooked. The next was David Blaine. When I saw his awesome Ambitious Card Routine, I decided to take it to the next level. I now perform the ACR regularly.

I started with classics like the table spread and the thumb fan. One day I learned the Charlier cut. Cut (pun intended) to several years later, I picked up a card flourishing DVD at a magic store, and I never looked back.

I pick up whatever I want to create an effect with (usually cards), and start messing them. I rarely have an idea come into my head if I'm not messing with my cards.

Start small. You see amazing tricks and flourishes, and want to jump into them, but learn the small stuff, and big things will happen.
