Hey Patrick, just cuz' yer entertaining, doesn't make you any less a magician. Most magicians today could barely entertain a thought, let alone a crowd. Be proud.
I started out as the Optical Illusionist due to my eyeball act. It was a joke that stuck. Nowadays, I tell people that I am an entertainer but I am thinking of trying out the monniker "Incidental Comedian"
Cards across, card in mouth, card on forehead, card to fly, even a himber wallet can play right. However, I suggest using jumbo index for higher visibility, OR if you want to be silly buy Lo-vision cards. Those crack me up.
I recently purchased a panasonic pv-gs150 (older model) on ebay for rather cheaper then the going price. Ebay can be a double edged sword for electronics tho'.
Two things to look for on any camera that is a camcorder. 1. 3-ccd (Or three chip. It's a color thing. Makes everything look better)...
First off, the moment something like this goes live and opens it's doors to pretty much anyone, then it's no longer underground.
Regardless, if you are looking for new magic I have two pieces of advice for you: 1. Stop hanging out on magic message boards and shopping for magic online. 2. Spend...
For the most part, the stuff he does on TV could be done by ANY of you. It requires no skill to gesture and scream while others do the magic for you. He is more an actor than magician now. (He took that actor playing the part of a magician quote too damn far I think)
Much of the stuff he USED...
Yay thought provoking text!!
Over the summer I performed magic as a pirate for the local six flags. I could not have the cards signed as markers and pens would have been EXTREMELY out of character. I still did the same magic I normally do (Card on floor, dollar transpo, etc) without the usual...
There is a simple (Read: strong) OnW on Jim Pace's Vis-u-antics DVD that I use and it kills.
I am not much for gaffed OnW effects but This One is really worth looking into. It is little known so if you perform it, you'll prolly be the only one.
Gregory Wilson once told us that it is best to go with a single name OR emphasize a singular part of a two part name.
Houdini
Copperfield
Blaine
Angel
Richiardi
Cardini
Bizza... wait.. no.. that one is too obvious.
Regardless, pick something you like, because if you go far with it, you are...
I keep a deck of cards next to my computer, for whne I am bored, watching a video, or rendering footage. Generally I just play and see what comes out of my hands. (That sounded vaugely dirty)
A lot of my magic has come from play.. and being bored. A lot of the sleights I have made come from the...
Magic will endure the merely curious and dregs of the world. It is too much a staple of our world culture to ever fully go away. If you feel it is in danger, do something about it. Remind people it IS an art like painting or dance and requires the practice AND respect the other arts derive.
When creating your own show, I say start out with the goal of a solid 15 minutes and go from there. Your goal should be a well rounded, solid, and audience tested half hour. From this you can pick and choose your material if it needs to be shorter. If it is requested a longer performance, then...
My "street cred" tends to be known more for my personality and style of magic which I personally feel is better than being "that guy with the cards".
Name recognition. That's where it's at.
Altering the handling on a previously known effect does not make it yours. Taking concepts and utility moves from an effect and making a new bit with them does.
EX: Making a card go to the bottom of the deck instead of the top is still ambitious and not yours. Using the plot or concept of...
