    What is Mentalism to you?

I just want to comment here that mentalism is hard to take seriously from ANYONE under the age of 30. A 15 year old kid saying he can read your mind is not as believable and might come off a bit laughable to some. Just keep that in mind when choosing material.

    Criss Angel's Challenge

Actually The Asshat and Cyril both do magic you could only do with certain set ups and helpers to a degree. (Cyril not as much from what I have seen) They all use specially built props and situations you couldn't do "Impromptu" It's a nasty trap these guyys have gotten caught up in, by cyril...

    Swallowing Razor Blades

Wow how did I miss this? Since no one answered, I'll put this here for posterity: The DVD and book show about a dozen mthods to get your creativity jump started to think about your OWN methods and routines. If you dull your blades there is very little harm that will come to you. If you don't...

What do you present your 'magic' as?

I like to insult my audience but not their intelligence. They know if I whip out a deck of cards, chances are I am gonna find their card and I would rather be percieved as an artist with skill as someone who might look at a dancer or a painting. Life is perception and everyone will look at...

Best false shuffle for stacked decks?

Karl Hein's is good. It's a variation on some older stuff. Joshua Jay has a good false overhand shuffle. I seldom work with a table so a Zarrow does no good for me.

Where And Whom Do You Perform For?

Well last night was s stage show at the Local Improv with three others. 10 people shy of a sold out crowd. I was happy. I have diversified so that I can perform just about anywhere I am hired. Stage, parlour, talking, silent, close-up ,street, etc. The more you can do, the more you will work.

Magic in the hands is ALWAYS more impactful. PERIOD. Plastic bag or not.

    Consistency :: Does It Matter?

If you are referring to close-up consistency, I do not feel it is as important as stage. However, everything you can do to help them remember you... I myself use ONLY red backed jumbo index cards. (It's a preference and it keeps me from buying crap I don't need.) If you can do magic with...

    When you approach a group...

If you are working a venue or performing for tips NEVER give them the option to say yes or no. In a paying gig I will walk up to a group (Deck of cards in hand hidden) and ask if they have seen the magician wandering around. When they say no, I say "Good, pick a card" If it's random people...

Using soundtrack from a movie for close up/illusions... help

For the most part, as long as you are not selling a DVD or video of you performing to someone else's music you should be ok. My advice: Find local bands or performers you like that you can get permission to use their music or for a nominal fee create music FOR you. Of course there is a TON...

    Is there Street Magic?

What we call "Street Magic" on forums such as this was started by David Blaine in 89'. Those of us who do "Street Theater" know that it is more of a parlour show than one on one. That doesn't make money. (not like real street magic does) Even what is called Doorway shows (Smaller stand up shows)...

    Performance today went pretty bad...

Can't fool everyone. Some people just pay attention. Sometimes if I am trying something new I tell them it's new and then ask if they saw anything they shouldn't. I have no problem asking for honest feedback. If someone does something they shouldn't it tells me part of the routine needs...

Some different looks at the evolution of your magic

This seems a bit contradictory. I agree with the first part. However I don't think trying to learn EVERYTHING is a good idea. A great portion of sleights and effects are crap (As working at a magic shop will teach you) However, something I do agree with is to learn at your own pace, (And...

Why are there so few women in magic?

Many kids male and female get into magic at a young age. However magic is not an overly encouraged "thing" for girls to get into. Not only by their families but also by their peers. To this day many believe that girls can't be magicians... which is BS but whatever. As anyone gets older, their...

    Trick of the Year

I threw Interlace at them. Also, the only REALLY new trick that came from here is Panic. The other two are variations on older themes and to me that disqualifies them. Same goes for DVD's on such things as the muscle pass and razor blade illusion (alas)
