    Double Backers and Dana Hocking

My favorite is to do an obvious two card push-over and then only turn one card over after you square up. 'That look good?...no no, I'm working on making my singles look like my doubles.'

    Double Backers and Dana Hocking

Dana is with Wayne Houchin now, as well as doing his own work I'm sure, Andrei (correct me if I'm wrong) does the music for T11 now, as well as a lot of the video editing. Double backers have quite a few uses, the 'trick that fooled Houdini' uses a DB and it's also a great utility card. For...

    Patience = Astonishment

Hmm...so that's how Anything-Is-Possible bottles start out, a mini deck and time to grow... On a serious note, thanks for sharing, I've seen fruit in bottles and wondered 'how the heck did they do that!' not thinking that you could grow it inside while on the tree. I believe it was in the...

Did I reply to this question well?

While a good answer, AsherF said it best, it didn't answer the question he was asking. As for what I usually say, "That would be one way to do it." Edward Norton uses this one in The Illusionist when the crown prince attempts to figure out one of his tricks. It's one I'm fond of.

The Card Trick That Never Happened!

Well done, a great routine indeed. This isn't an opener, definitely doable for spectators though. You'll have to find some that are genuinely interested in what you do before you perform it.

Kids copying me and messing up my tricks.

Here is one of many. Just look around, there are tons of books/booklets with good magic in them. Good card mentalism is hard enough to find, maybe try some mentalism that doesn't involve cards? Corinda, Cassidy and Annemann have enough material to make a half dozen career mentalist who all do...

Kids copying me and messing up my tricks.

Do some tricks with objects that are not currently being exposed, rope magic can be both funny and effective, and it isn't being exposed on youtube like every new card trick on the market. Work with some everyday, borrowed, objects. This can go a long way. And, like many said, take it back a...

    DVD On Presentation & Showmanship

Great suggestions man, I suggested the book that I think requires the most outside thought and suggests you watch other performers (of every different performing art) while telling you ways to make it relevant to magic. In then end, DVD or book or both, going out and doing it is the only way to...

    DVD On Presentation & Showmanship

Showmanship for Magicians by Dariel Fitzkee is a great book that (after you sift through the older style language) is full of invaluable insight that will make you a better performer.

An Underground feeling, for some old classics

I didn't mean they were hermits and nobody at all knew them, but I can think of a few magicians that never get mentioned on forums or at conventions that do great work and are amazing at their craft. They've purposely stayed under the radar to keep their material to themselves and to stay out of...

An Underground feeling, for some old classics

If you're underground no one else will know it. I agree with everyone else, David Blaine has taken magic away from top hats and stage illusions and he's more mainstream than any artist on here. Don't worry about being 'underground', just be who you set out to be (don't just 'be yourself'...

An end to gimmicked Haunted deck

Aaron Delong has an impromptu haunted deck where the deck separates and then comes back leaving one card sticking out-you can pull it out and it is their card. Your method looks similar to one I've seen before. Only it was in the other direction...I don't want to tip those who don't know (and...

    Card to box routine snippet

That was pretty awesome. Card to box can be really fishy sometimes but your's looked clean. Most magicians don't look natural when they go to palm a card from the deck after it's controlled, so kudos eliminating a step in the process (control/palm at the same time). Nice music to go with it too...

cups and balls or T11 stuff

Get the cups and balls set, even if you don't perform it often it will teach you a lot about magic that you'll use in everything else you do.

    The Red Queen's Head

Knock'em dead when you perform at brunch! As far as egos go, there are tons of magicians who are well known and still the nicest guys around. It's disappointing when people do that (especially if he was nice the first time) but a lot of people in general don't seem to understand that nobody is...

    Hip-Hop & Magic

I like the promo video Smoothini. Most of the hip-hop influenced magicians I know have already been posted, sorry I couldn't help with it. I do want to say that you rope routine and Card in Hat videos (I just watched on youtube) are freakin' hilarious. Keep up the (good) funny work.

Shaky Hands & Falling Cards. Beating Anxiety

That should play fantastic! Have you practiced CTC on the height you're working with? High Tosses can be tricky, but not undoable. And that Card/Name routine is a winner, I don't own Psypher, but I've seen it demo'd.

Shaky Hands & Falling Cards. Beating Anxiety

Practice, practice, practice and then perform, perform, perform. An easy formula to remember. Great essay Jamie, as usual, I'm glad you're willing to take the time to share insight that normally takes years of failure to get right. You'll do fine, 'Break a leg' as they say.

    Practicing Misdirection

Like Rev said, it's essential to create enough of a rapport before you start your first trick (or during it) that your audience is reacting the way you want them to. If you just walk up and ask 'Wanna see a trick?' and then don't ask their names or any questions about them then you'll have no...
