The problem could be your right hand's grip on the cards. If you hold too loosely, extra cards may slip when you try to run cards. Check the pressure being applied with your fingertips in particular.

I'm not sure if the pause you mean is exactly after the shift. If it's not, then I think it would be better to try and cut that time down. It's also somewhat loud, but friction is friction.

Getting those Derren Brown books may be somewhat difficult and will definitely be expensive. Not to make your list more complicated, but look in to Mastering the Art of Magic by Eugene Burger. Similarly themed to the collected you've list and an excellent read.
