    Bad Magic Advice

A few things make me mad in magic. Well lots of things, but bad magic advice hits me hard. Some of this can be pretty funny, but other stuff can be pretty bad or just plain stupid. Here's an example of something from real life. A while back someone online was "helping" a new magician to learn...

    Lottery Ticket Trick

The inspiration for Nate's trick is from an Anthony Owen trick taught here: http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/10866 It is similar and still very much available.

YOU DON'T GET TO KNOW HOW IT WORKS!

David, this is why I love this forum! You know I have all the respect in the world for you. I don't think we are going to agree on this, which is fine. I was thinking about your arguments and my counter-arguments here and I bet if we sifted through these pages long enough we could find 3 other...

Most reliable way of doubling cards and to keep cards doubled without holding opposite sides

You need to always have 3 points of pressure, this isn't my tip it comes from Expert Card Technique. You aren't pressing hard you are just using two fingers in front with the thumb on the back, the three points help to steady the card. Read through the section on the double lift in Expert Card...

    Better presentation

I have been experimenting with crazy presentations lately. I think that the presentation needs to be extremely sparse or all in. I'd rather see something completely ridiculous than something not all that interesting. For a simple coin vanish, I talk about how Japanese scientists are developing...

What's a magic effect that does not exist yet?

Two more came to mind. Effect 8: McDonald's It would be great to go to a McDonald's and stand your buddy in front of the tall sign with the special orders on it. The ones with the plastic letters. You then ask them to make a realistic order and even name a price. When you show them the sign it...

What's a magic effect that does not exist yet?

Anything to do with death can be super interesting. This isn't as personal but I'd love to have a prediction on a headstone at a cemetery. Haha, when I die on mine I'm going to put a circle in a triangle, 37, and the Queen of Hearts in different places. No, I think I would like to take a walk...

What's a magic effect that does not exist yet?

Ooh, I like this! I like the idea of putting it in a shoe box and putting the box in the spectator's hand. As they shake the box they can hear the pieces start to come together. When they open the box the thing has been totally solved. I'd perform this!

What's a magic effect that does not exist yet?

Yeah, I was really trying to go crazy with these ideas and get at something new. I'm surprised at how many of these tricks may have a possible method or methods. It's a fun exercise.

What's a magic effect that does not exist yet?

This question has been asked in many places in many ways. Most of the responses a thread like this gets are nowhere near creative enough. I want to hear your craziest ideas for magic tricks that you wish you could do. I'll give an example of some magic effects that I have thought of as examples...

YOU DON'T GET TO KNOW HOW IT WORKS!

True, I think that somewhere in here we actually agree with each other. If the illusion breaks down, whether it is because they know the actual method or have guessed wrong, we have failed. This doesn't mean that the audience needs to ignore the method. This means that they need to look through...

YOU DON'T GET TO KNOW HOW IT WORKS!

My daughter is 3 years old. I do magic for her sometimes. It is to the point that when she has lost something a toy, or her shoes she says that it must have disappeared in her ear. She is completely honest in this. She thinks that daddy can make anything vanish and appear in her ear. In her...

The level of professionalism here is what I like. I also think that you'd probably be okay if the guy said no.

YOU DON'T GET TO KNOW HOW IT WORKS!

My point is that it's bad form to ask how anther magician does a trick, to their face or otherwise. To your above points I disagree with at least one main point. It's not all or nothing. There is something big or little that I can fault in any magician's career. That doesn't kill it for me. I...

YOU DON'T GET TO KNOW HOW IT WORKS!

Okay, this is a rant. I still love all of you. Whether you have been performing for a few days or a few years we can agree that there are spectators out there that are obnoxious to perform for. These are the, "I saw that!", "I know how you did that!", or "I'm going to look that up on You Tube!"...

Any guide to learn this Chris Ramsay trick?

I also think that news casters are a terrible audience. Their responses always feel canned. I actually think that her reaction is better than most newscasters here.

david blaine mental card magic "guessing color of the next card" trick?

The classic version is called Out of this World by Paul Curry. Off World could be used to closely proximate David's performance.

Which Magic do you guys think is more fooling: Card magic, Coin Magic, or Mentalism magic?

The easiest way to fool someone is by doing a long boring mathematical card trick. Coin magic is the most naturally visual of your three choices. This means that it can be fun to watch but might not be all that fooling. A coin roll or card flourish can get a big reaction but they aren't fooling...
