    The 'World XMC Championships'

Right, to be fair, the intro sequence on the first video is a bit silly (however, I imagine it was done with an element of tongue-in-cheek). And, additionally, the interpretation of "live performance" on the second video is less than inspiring. However, by their very nature of being performed to...

    The Pass

If you can find Ken Krenzel's The Pass video then definitely pick that up. I don't think it's been released on DVD, which is a great shame, as I think Dr Krenzel often gets overlooked by younger magicians. Also, Randy Wakeman's The Pass DVD is excellent, teaching a large variety of shifts, many...

    The Ultimate Challenge

I haven't, but I just wanted to point out that the shuffle was first described by Dai Vernon rather than Dan and Dave.

    Who are you?

I presume that all of us here seek to be or to become magicians, rather than people who can do some tricks. For those of you who are "yourselves" when you perform, what happens when you're not in a performance situation? Presumably you're exactly the same. If so, I envy, you, because I, for one...

    Magic Collecting

On the bargain side of things, I got a 3rd edtion Expert Card Technique (the one with the extra material from Vernon and Daley), for $33. Some of the highlights of my collection are a 1st edition Scarne on Cards signed by John Scarne, and Inner Secrets of Card Magic and More Inner Secrets of...

    The spinning card of doom!

It's known as the Martin Lewis spinner or index finger propulsion. I'm not sure where it's originally described, but it can be found on The Art of Card Throwing DVD by Rick Smith Jr, in Cards as Weapons by Ricky Jay (if you're lucky enough to find a copy), and in the Encyclopedia of Playing Card...

How do you become a con man ?

There is a vast library of literature on con artistry, from the con and carnie game material that can be found from most magic dealers, through to books on the history of scamming, and biographies of some of the most famous grifters. A good starting place is www.gamblersbookshop.com. Although...

    Diagonal Palm Shift

    I mentioned it. ;)

    Diagonal Palm Shift

You can DPS multiple cards, from a single location, or from multiple locations. The move is taught in the "Legerdemain" section of Expert at the Card Table, so it was not taught as a gambling move, and it's hard to think of an application that would be consistent with normal gaming procedure...

    Erdnase?

I think maybe something's been missed in this discussion. The reason why Vernon et al prized Erdnase so much is not for the sleights or tricks themselves, but for the thinking behind them. So, you may never use an Open Shift, but by studying Erdnase's description, you may learn something about a...

    Sybil Cuts

That's not strictly accurate. If you read Totally Out of Control, you'll see "Sybil"(a cut more resembling Genesis than "Sybils" we would know today), "Five Faces of Sybil" (the cut which is taught as "Sybil" on The Trilogy), and "Sybil the Trick" (an effect using a variation of Five Faces of...

    Cardini Change? Ego Change?

Where did you find out that the change in the Buckley book is called a Cardini? I'm not disputing that, I'm just interested.

Are magicians too worried about who is doing this move?

This is what makes them perfect examples. When I practice the SWE or Open Shift (things I never perform in front of a lay audience), it helps me understand more about shift mechanics, something that I can then apply to my classic pass (which I use in performance all the time).

Are magicians too worried about who is doing this move?

Do you also hate it when sculptors also work on painting in oils, or when crime fiction authors write a biography...or when coin workers practice card sleights? If you do, then fair enough, I'd love to see why you feel that way. If not, then please explain why you hate people loving their craft...

Thursday Night Roundtable - The Side Steal

I tend to delay the side-steal by side-jogging the card as it's inserted, and talking for a bit holding the deck in a casual overhand grip. Then the side-steal can be executed very quickly in the action of transferring the deck to the other hand.

Books from Martin Gardner and/or Persi Diaconis?

I don't think Persi Diaconis has released anything magic-related, but Martin Gardner has published quite extensively. Are you specifically looking for mathematical magic, or more recreational maths kind of stuff? If the former, then I'd recommend Harry Lorayne's Mathematical Wizardry, and Arthur...

Are magicians too worried about who is doing this move?

Definitely. I did a little improvised ambitious card routine the other day which was basically three top changes in a row, followed by a face-up riffle-pass. Magic isn't created by moves, it's about the presentation. Fair enough, a good repertoire of moves will expand the types of effect you can...

    Cardini Change? Ego Change?

Sorry Ian, I have to back up Praetoritevong. The first printed source for the Cardini change is Hugard's Card Manipulations. In fact, I haven't seen it described anywhere else, so I'd be interested to know where you've learned it from. The Cardini change uses a third-finger break, the Ego change...

    Cardini Change? Ego Change?

The confusion arises because Dan and Dave teach a modified Cardini change on The Trilogy, and a lot of people have taken that to be the original handling of the Cardini change, which it isn't.

    Bottom Dealing From Straddle Grip

The bottom deal from straddle grip isn't necessarily Dr Elliott's. Walter Scott also had a straddle-grip deal described in The Phantom of the Card Table. The difference between the two is that in Dr Elliott's method, the top card is pushed over by the left thumb and the take is with an inward...
