I think it depends on the age of the audience as a primary point that must be considered. Kids believe in magic! Few thinking adults would disagree with this. So doing a show for kids must be presented as magic. Nuff Said on that one! Adults, on the other hand, living in the USA, intuitively...

I forgot to mention, that I did get Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic, it is wonderful! I found a used one on either ebay or Amazon. I was not real expensive and has a lifetime of tricks and information in it...!

My initial magic was limited to tricks that required limited skills and practice, mainly learning to tell the story, be animated, and entertaining, developing my own style of presentation. (e.g. Cups and Balls, rope tricks like professors nightmare, cut and restored rope, Chinese Sticks...

Don't be afraid of sponge balls, when you start out they seem hard, but he basics you learn apply to coins, cards and many other tricks that rely on eye hand coordination, repetition, and knowledge. Also the information is readily available and the sponge balls are inexpensive.

As with any other art form, if you can take something that seems trivial and turn it into something that truly is perceived as magical you have opened an unending wealth of entertainment that you can offer as your special talent.

Sorry I am not qualified to answer this, many other will answer for you....but I wanted to warn you, Magic is dangerous, once infected you frequently cannot get cured! Beware....once infected you will forever pursue more magic, more magic, and more magic......Good Luck and Have Fun!
