Derren Brown confessions of a conjuror and tricks of the mind

Both of these books were written for the general public, so you won't find much of interest from a 'learning magic' point of view. They are both good entertaining reads though. Derren's 'magician only' books are 'Pure Effect' and 'Absolute Magic.' Again, both great reads but good luck finding a...

    Derren Brown ACAAN

I seriously doubt this is a marketed effect. Derren is a very high profile professional, I doubt he'd risk performing anything one could simply buy from a magic shop. Plus, I think he has a bit more artistic integrity than that. Great trick though. Rev

Crazy good performance on Fool Us by Shin Lim

This guy gets it. I'm with you. Found it a bit hard to follow, almost too much going on. Plus, I really dislike close up performed to music. The great thing about close up is you can interact with people, and I always considered allowing time for people to react, and enjoying their reactions...

    Help with making reviews

I can tell you what not to do, and I see this a lot. Don't copy and paste the ad copy, and then just say 'I think this is a great trick' 10/10 Recommended.' That's not a review. Rev

    Card College Light question

I only have 'Light' but I believe that they all contain different tricks/routines. Look up the contents online and you'll get an idea of what the contain. In case you weren't aware, these aren't just condensed versions of the 'Card College' books. The actually written first, but published under...

    Non-educational magic books

I love reading 'non magic' magic books (if that makes any sense at all!) My favourite book on magic history/magicians is 'Hiding the Elephant' by Jim Steinmeyer. I was also lucky enough to get my copy signed by Jim after his lecture at the International Magic Convention last year (you don't...

Saturday Night Contest - Fake the Break!

Creating a 100% Card Magic Show For ALL Ages

The guys above seem to have responded on the basis this is a 'kids' show but I think what you're aiming for is a 'family show'. If I'm wrong please feel free to say so. I actually think your choice of effects is pretty good. They are visual and it's not really 'about the cards' per se. They are...

    David Blaine's Real Or MAgic

Paul Harris is the guy you need to look into. He and David are good friends. Not going to tell you where to find it or what it's called. I don't want to take away the 'joy of the search', but Paul Harris is the guy you want. Rev

    Happy Fathers Day

Already had breakfast in bed from my daughter... ...I say my daughter, she's only a year old...so I suspect my wife might have helped a bit. Rev

    "Looks like a camera trick!"

Dude, that's one of the coolest things i've seen in a long time! Literally no idea of a method. Well done! I'm really into my science as well so I loved the presentation. This could be right up my street! Rev

    More Card Ideas

Cheers man, thanks for the kind words. Re the spelling: Spelling tricks are something magicians either love or hate. Personally, I like them. A lot of other magicians seem to like them. And I think laymen like them as well. Yes, it takes some time to get to the change, but I think this throws...

    More Card Ideas

Thanks for the for the kind words. Re Cheap Suit: I understand what you mean about it being a bit of an odd effect. I wasn't sure it would really work as an effect either until I tried it on a few people. The effect is essentially exactly the same as the Maven original, but the handling is a...

    More Card Ideas

Apologies, but this bit is going to make no sense to anyone on this forum! I copied this post from another forum I frequent which has a locked sub-forum where secrets can be discussed/taught. That's what this sentence refers to. However, if anyone is interested in the handling, drop me a PM and...

    More Card Ideas

Hi All! I have been stuck at home the last two days with my thirteen month old daughter whilst she recovers from a nasty virus. During one of her extended naps, I thought I might do something constructive and film a couple of routines. Of course, this means the dishes are now not done, so the...

Do people still like card tricks?

Ha ha! Ok, I'll give you that one! Just to say I wasn't saying you were wrong. We've all all been bored out of our skulls by card trick performances before, whether it be on Youtube or in magic convention competitions. However, it just seem to be the 'accepted' wisdom that card tricks are...

Do people still like card tricks?

I see people say this a lot, but this is something I myself have never come experienced. I pretty much exclusively perform card magic, the only exception being Crazyman's Handcuffs and (occasionally) sponge balls. I love practicing all kinds of different stuff, but cards is what I perform for...

    The Utility Items

I would say a utility is something that is not a trick in and of itself. For example. A thumb tip is not a trick. How you use it is very much dependent on what you need it for. Is it for a vanish? A switch? A production? Context matters. Svengali deck is another one. A lot of beginners would...

    Inspiration and the Creative Process

Very nice of you to say so. I don't claim to be any great oracle of magic. I still consider myself to be a rank beginner in most senses of the word. But I have been doing it a while and made plenty of mistakes along the way, and I continue to do so. A lot of people would say things like, 'I'll...
