    Why do magicians dislike mentalism?

I think there is a dislike of those who profess to be psychics -- that might be traced back to Houdini. However, I've never heard of any magician who looks down on mentalism. I'll agree that mentalism encourages belief. I think most magic encourages disbelief. The reactions that people are...

    New to magic. Please help

You called? I think @ChristopherT said it well. If cost is an issue start with Royal Road. If it isn't an issue, start with Card College. With Card College you don't have to buy all five volumes at once. Start with the first two volumes. The first two books were originally written as a two...

Where do I learn this miracle?

@Lord Magic - I suspect that this can done using a combination of methods explained in 13 Steps to Mentalism. Let me look in a couple of other books to see what the best routine is and I'll send you a PM. The first two books that come to mind are Paramiracles and Mind, Myth and Magik -- both...

How to read a magic book

If you are talking about Art of Astonishment -- READ IT COVER TO COVER!!! It is brilliant, funny, engaging and just wonderful. Every effect in the book is great - I'd end up listing the whole table of contents. Some of them I would never perform, but the idea is brilliant and the methods are...

Where do I learn this miracle?

@ChristopherT said a lot of books... confabulation is a standard mentalism plot that should be known to anyone who has studied mentalism like an ambitious card routine should be known to someone who studies card magic. Here is some of the resources...

    Thumb Tips and Finger Tips

I would use the finger tip when I can, depending on the utility of using it for the effect. As with anything, one method or another will work better for the effect.

    Thumb Tips and Finger Tips

Torn and restored sugar packet. One of the best things I've ever seen was Magik Balay using a thumb tip to produce a full size pair of scissors. The finger tip is fun because even if someone knows about a thumb tip, they will be thrown off because they will be watching your thumb.

    Can't understand books?

Aaron: The books you have were written a while ago. For example, Expert at the Card Table was written in 1902, Expert Card Technique in 1940 and Royal Road in 1951. They are sometimes difficult to understand, there are some mistakes in the descriptions and sometimes the drawings don't reflect...

    Magicians ARE NOT liars!

As an example, in Scarne on Card Tricks, the effects Calling the Cards and The Upside Down Deck both use a lie as part of the method. Some of my favorite effects using a lie as a method are Jim Steinmeyer's The Magician Who Fools Himself, John Bannon's Miraskill and Kirk Charles' You Pick My...

    Coin Magic

Any magic trick standing by itself is not inherently interesting. It is up to the performer to make it interesting through their presentation. People pay attention to a performer, not a trick. That is just his style. I wouldn't recommend imitating it unless you have a camera crew and are...

    Magicians ARE NOT liars!

Oh, I actually lie... a lot... to my audiences. Some of my favorite methods involve lying. That said, I've never been called a liar. Probably because I believe all my lies. Dang.. zero for two.;) True, but that ignores the elephant in the room. Wait, there is an elephant? Where...
