What are some of your favourite card controls?

There is a great section in Roberto Giobbi's book Confidences about controls. For me, context is key. Which control you use should be dictated by what happens before and after the control and which natural movements you can use as cover for the control. Unless, of course, you need the card...

    Name this deck?

Other full deck effects using blank cards: Craig Petty's Wipeout (on his Blank DVD but will need a blank deck) Dean Dill's Blizzard Anthony Miller and Magick Balay's Colossal Blizzard 2.0 Caleb Wiles' Holy Blank

    Name this deck?

I'm guessing the effect is Erazer 2.0 by Adrian Gower. I have no problem telling you this because you will have to purchase the effect to learn it. There are some YouTube Videos of performances by Adrian and by Chris Ballenger (Magic Geek videos now hosted by Vanishing, Inc.).

Friendly Laymen tell I must have copied (in a way, indirectly)!!!

To a laymen, it all looks the same. Lose a card, find a card. Produce four aces. Make a coin vanish and reappear. Figure out a word picked from a book. All the variations and differences in method that we care about as magicians don't make a difference. Like @ChristopherT, most of my...

Mentors and How to Find Them

I've found that forums like T11 and the old Ellusionist forums provide a type of mentorship. There are the discussions on the forums and then some aquaintences that turn into friendships. I've got friends around the world that I can talk with on Skype about magic. I've worked with magicians...

    Stars of Magic

That is not correct. Meir Yedid purchased the publishing rights in 2003. He had nothing to do with the original series of manuscripts that were originally published in the 1940s and 1950s or the original bound copies of the series which were originally published by Tannens and then D. Robins...

What are the best book to buy

If you can afford it, get the Card College series.... even if you start with the first two books and get the next three later. To add to @Maaz Hasan list of affordable books - Buckely's Card Control, The Card Magic of LePaul, Karl Fulves' Foolproof Card Tricks and Fulves' Self Working Mental Magic.

    Is this trick original?

As @ChristoperT said, this is a combination of a variety of existing effects. My issue is that is seems to me that the combination actually weakens the effects. A spectator should be able to explain what they saw in a sentence. Confusion is not magic. Further, there is no consistent...

BETRAYED!!! AND sorry for the rant, but the prob needs to be explained...

"You have just seen amazing magic with your own eyes. I want to do something different and present magic that happens entirely in the mind." Go last.

    Quick question...The dressing problem

See my profile pic. Black pants, French blue button down shirt, black blazer. Sunglasses optional. The typical magician look was developed by Jean Robert-Houdin because he wanted to dress like the people he was performing for and bring magic off the streets and into the parlor. I dress...

Where can I buy/learn that mental effect?

"We're going to wander around a library for 30 minutes making random choices to see if you can find a book that contains a word I wrote down."

Where can I buy/learn that mental effect?

Just from her reaction, it seems like there is the use of dual reality. If the effect she perceived is as it is shown, any rational person would have run away screaming to find a mob with torches and pitchforks. However, she merely reacts as if she is amused saying it is "cool."

    Color changes, different reactions...

Spectators react that way because they don't know the names and difficulty of the moves you are doing. However, if they sense you are doing a "move" it loses its magic. Sometimes, simple moves are more invisible and therefore more inexplicable. Additionally, reactions depend on context and...

    Where to get things made?

It really is a matter of finding the people who have the tools and the skills to do what you want. For small numbers of items, you are probably dealing with custom fabricators. Lynetta Welch can do anything with fabric. Cliff Wiggs at Proline can custom make linking rings and similar...

    Uses for Mnemonica stack

Necessity is the mother of invention. You know the capabilities of a memorized deck, so develop your own effects. I have a lot of friends in places where it is difficult to ship magic books. The solution is to purchase in bulk and ship via U.S. Priority Mail. A medium box will fit 10 or more...

How to read an old book?

Getting an annotated version allows for better comprehension and allows you to learn variations of the techniques explained. Erdnase shouldn't be your first book on card magic.

@Maaz Hasan - Get checked by a doctor. Swelling to the degree you are talking about is very likely unrelated to using your hands too much.

    In a Name

I like @Rev's signature... it is something like "just a guy who does card tricks." Me, I'm just a guy who loves studying, talking about and performing magic. Describe, don't label. So let's take this further. Write a paragraph introduction (this does sound like a homework assignment doesn't...
