    Need help with routine

So, let's talk terminology. An "effect" is what the audiences sees - a card rising to the top, a coin disappearing, etc. A pick a card/ lose a card / find a card trick is a single effect. The Biddle Trick (which has a great history HERE) is an effect. A "routine" is a series of effects...

    Negative Feedback From People

@Maaz Hasan I suspect your experience may be different. I work a lot with high school kids through scouting and I get the sense that there still are groups and cliques and a fair share of people who act like jerks. However, even within a group of friends, there typically is some level of...

    A bit of encouragement!

When you are beginning magic, it takes a while to get proficient in handling the cards in general. My advice is to make sure you are practicing the techniques properly. A lot of the "teachers" on YouTube have very bad technique. Simple things like how to properly hold the deck affect your...

    Negative Feedback From People

Middle school and high school are probably not the best place to show magic. Most of your fellow students are all trying to compete for social standing. Often magic is (intentionally or unintentionally) presented as "I'm going to trick you." In a typical performance situation, that translates...

What is your favorite color change?

The handling I use came from Justin Miller on Army of 52 DVD. It really does look magical. Source? In the Aretalogy of Vanni Bossi there is the Golden Change where a card changes as it is tossed on the table.

    1 Card Switch

@Maaz Hasan, do you just need to end up with the gaff card in your hands? If so, take card out of you pocket in position to add to the deck on the bottom (reverse of a gambler's cop) but have the card reversed (i.e. back toward your hand). Return their selected card to the top of the deck...

    Skipping in Books

Do what makes you happy. Some of the older books are a tough read. Some newer books are just a joy to read - Giobbi's Confidences, Drawing Room Deceptions, Tom Stone's Vortex, anything by John Bannon. As @FunkyBottoms said, it depends why you bought the book. I have a lot of books that I've...

    Questions on Shaving Down Cards

I think I originally posted (or maybe sait it in a PM to @Maaz Hasan) that corners shorts are called Marlo Shorts. Upon further research, I've figured out that a Marlo Short is diferent than a corner short. Essentially, Marlo used a card cut as if it were from a stripper deck.

    The Svengali Deck?

I'm jealous. :D That is on my wish list -- unfortunately I keep finding OOP books that I want to spend my money on. Two questions: 1) does it work doing concave and belly strippers? and 2) it actually does the Sub Rosa work? Feel free to PM the answers if you think they would skirt too...

    The Svengali Deck?

A paper cutter will trim one card at a time. I recommend getting THIS which will work on short cards. You also can get THIS to round the edges to mimic a regular edge using the S[mall] setting (if you ever trim a card you will know why) . You can also use the M[edium] setting to make corner...

How to ruin a 100$ deck of cards

So, watching the video the way he is holding the box is a little strange -- sort of like he is trying to convince us they are a real deck. And the video is just a little too good for tripping and dropping the deck. My first reaction is that something isn't quite what it seems.

looking for good sponge ball dvd/books

@obrienmagic - Nice television spot and promo video but some constructive criticism: Did I hear you say examine this and see if it a ordinary ball and a ordinary (invisible) purse? My sense is that you never ask someone to examine something because you are indirectly suggesting that there is a...

looking for good sponge ball dvd/books

The best resource is Frank Garcia's Encyclopedia of Sponge Ball Magic... which is out of print and runs $195 to $411 for used versions. My sense is that you can typically find it for around $125 on the Magic Cafe if you are willing to watch and wait. I picked up a copy for $80 around two years...

    Blanks

Let me clarify -- nail polish remover will strip off the shiny coating from the card. I've used that on blank cards to enable them to be printed on. I don't know if that gets rid of the ink. Use a Q-tip on a test section of the card. I have gotten rid of pips on cards by gently using a white...

I would just buy them: http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/662 but to strip off the face of a card you would use nail polish remover.

    Coin boxes

If you are talking about an Okito Box or Boston Box, start with BoBo's NEW Modern Coin Magic. This is different than the inexpensive Dover Modern Coin Magic in that it has a couple of additional chapters which include, among other things, more ideas for an Okito box. If budget is an issue, get...

What is your favorite color change?

Yes, but I can't remember the difference. The Trapdoor is available in a three volume set from Steve Beam's website at $90 a volume or $250 for the set... as I said, that is on my wish list. The reference to Hofzinser's Twirl Change is from DeSousa's Deceptions as part of Marc's crediting...
