An expanded shell is exactly that - say, a half dollar expanded shell will be in the form of a half dollar, but slightly expanded, so as to fit a half dollar within. A normal shell will be exactly the size of a half dollar - i.e. it will fit smaller coins, but not an actual half dollar.
