    Magic Castle

The great irony of the magical community. Magic is a performing art, the "experts" say. Magic is about creating the experience for laymen. As they judge your sleight of hand skill standing in front of a panel of magicians. -_-" Congrats to jackeduprex though, it's nonetheless an achievement...

A good place to start with Card Flourishing?

Terrible advice. If you're going to learn magic, it doesn't mean you just do it. There's a lot more to it than that. Same with flourishing. Same with anything else. You don't struggle through advanced physics without studying the basics. You don't study vectors without studying algebra, etc...

    mem deck and past midnight

As far as Mem decks go, my personal preference is Tamariz's Mnemonica. Of particular use is his five methods of memorisation, which allowed me to memorise the entire stack in two and a half hours (the average, he says, is three, by the way). I also feel that Mnemonica has more built in features...

Lessons Learned From Legerdemain - Lesson #4

Again, I can see where you're coming from. I'd like to throw a few thoughts out there to you, let me know what you think. 1) You will probably never use extensive maths in your life. You will probably never use calculus again. Pure mathematics will not be your first, only, and best love. So why...

Lessons Learned From Legerdemain - Lesson #4

Errr... I can see why someone would argue this perspective, but I would regard it as amongst the more misguided advice on these boards. Quoting David Mamet in this instance is entirely inappropriate. You're assuming that what holds for actors also holds for the rest of humanity, which is a...

    Creating Presentation

Tony Chang's ACR presentation is perhaps the best I have ever witnessed. Whilst I hold a certain disdain for those who like him simply for his sleight of hand ability... ("OMG! His sleights are amazing! He MUST be a good magician, right?" WRONG! Quit magic and kill yourself!) ...That is...

Swami or Boon? Whats the difference?

A word firstly on the Lincoln's Best Boon - much lauded, and, for the established professional, probably the best of its kind. And a word on Corinda: I often close walk around routines with the first effect in the book. Don't neglect the basics.

Does Anyone Recommend Any Luke Jermay Books For Me?

I did expect someone to mention an example like yourself, or Uri, both established mentalists in your own respective rights. I just wanted to add something. First: I agree with what you're saying. BUT, it's a very different thing to recommend any other path as a form of generic advice. Uri...

    Chaotic Card Magic

This is the Ricky Jay video I was thinking of in particular: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C01qpmWAeC0

    Chaotic Card Magic

I don't know if this is the sort of thing you're looking for, but have a look first at Malone's Sam the Bellhop, and then Danny Garcia's impromptu version of the effect for inspiration. The general gist might work for you, the plot seems to fit nicely. Some multiple card control effects such...

    What effect would you perform?

The effect I would perform would probably be terrible performed by you. For example, I can't perform The Biddle Trick for crap. And it's not because I can't perform the sleights - that's fine. It's because I find the effect incredibly boring to perform, therefore I can't present it well. Also...

    How much is too much?

I was playing with an idea yesterday, namely, riffle shuffling the deck whilst preserving a key card location within the deck. The pair of cards start at the top of the deck, so it's a simple matter of ensuring the two fall together (I preferred to have the top card change though, so they'd end...

    Clipshift

Practice for another 2 months. You're not in a position to learn finesses when you barely have the move down.

Does Anyone Recommend Any Luke Jermay Books For Me?

Yes, and? You're on the right track. This basic knowledge that you speak of, about a subject, is indeed missing with a beginner. What does this basic knowledge consist of? Knowledge of sleight of hand Knowledge of performance theory Knowledge of magic history/magic as an art Performing...

Does Anyone Recommend Any Luke Jermay Books For Me?

If you haven't gotten 13 Steps, you have no business calling and aren't ready to call yourself anything other than a beginner. Just my opinion.

Does Anyone Recommend Any Luke Jermay Books For Me?

-.- Fiiine. Let me rephrase. This is a common problem with a lot of young mentalists, and from the info that we've got, it sounds like the OPer is falling into the same trap, so beware, because it will only make your performances worse.

Does Anyone Recommend Any Luke Jermay Books For Me?

Beginners looking for "tricks". It happens, as sure as the sun will rise in the morrow. Everyone wants to learn the tricks, no-one wants to learn how to perform them.

    Tricks with a gold fish?

That thing is ridiculous. To date, that has been the most out of the blue, WTF, surprising magic effect I've ever seen.
