I'd go for something the consistency of a mousepad, soft and firm. I wouldn't need a super-soft and squishy pad. Most of my card work is in the hands right now, and if I ever have a set show where I want a pad I'll be making my own. JoAnns probably be the best place near where I live to find...

And in between the wood and felt, any padding you might prefer (craft stores have a lot of options). I don't own a closeup pad so I can't be of any more help...

It seemed short, more like one phase and not an entire sandwich routine. If your patter draws it out more and explains things in between the actions then I guess it would make it better overall. The deck compression was done brilliantly, the back and forth jumping of the card was pretty sweet...

Another option would be flash paper. Draw a coin on the paper, light it, and you then have a coin at your fingertips. I don't have flashburst, never seen it demoed either. I agree with nIvan, sounds like a simple setup overall, one trip to radioshack or a hardware store and an hours work...

The second video was better, but rushed. You also need to smooth out the imaginary grabbing of coins. It was a bit jerky, which may have been due to rushing. Slow it down, smooth it out. Practice can fix both problems.

People say the same for some of Ricky Jay's long winded performances, but I am thoroughly entertained by him as well. Just because it's not smash and grab magic doesn't mean that some people don't appreciate the subtleties of his act.
