Don't be afraid of opening up the top packet a little, at least until you build up speed. Just lift it up until your pinky isn't touching the card.

The fact that you can fan better well them is most likely a mental thing. If you've seen 'Blue Eyes Brown Eyes' you'll know how liking something can effect the way you use it.
