I think most people are replying with the top 5 effects from their repertoire, not in magic in general. Some of the effects people are listing, on a completely objective level, are nowhere near being the best in magic.

I just make sure I practice all the sleights I need to perform the effects I want. Just going out and performing is almost always enough to keep everything up to where it needs to be, but every now and then a mirror check reveals something I think I can improve on. Anything I practice...

Banachek has a really nice Drawing Duplication on volume one of his PSI Series. No stooges, no prep-work, and it's completely impromptu All you need is a pen and a small stack of business cards. Very practical and designed for close-up.

The (totally) impromptu effect I probably perform the most is Ring Thing by Garrett Thomas. It's quick, visual, and very magical looking. That's been a worker for me for years now. Always gets a great reaction.

I second Eric's recommendation on Ammar's DVD. It was also the first coin magic video I ever bought. Good material, well organized, and well taught. It's Ammar though--so how can you go wrong?
