"Smart"
Journal of March 30
By Luis Vega

this is a short journal...but decided to post it anyway, mostly because I haven´t post anything for sometime...

I am a part of a society call MENSA INTERNATIONAL... aparently they gather people with high IQ to improve humanity and save the world, whatevs... although I really don´t feel identified with a lot of them, I agree that they try to help each other and also to have some nice talks, aside from the common chit chat in normal life, it´s nice and sometimes very entertaining to fool them...

The main difference between "normal" people and "smart" people is that the people that thinks that are smart, don´t want to be fooled... regardless of how great the trick was, they always think they have the right answer, even if the answer is stupid..but it´s not stupid for them, since they think they are never wrong... So I decided to play with that...and teach them a lesson...

I got this meeting tonight so I decided to carry a little magic with me and present an interesting challenge...so nice and fun I giggle of just thinking about it...

I was in the meeting just talking and having a good time but I wasn´t aware that all of the people were aware that I am a magician, so they where expecting me to "try" to fool them... and then the moment to perform arrives, although I try to not perform for free, I have a plan....

"So thanks everyone!! as many of you know, I am an architect and an Ilusionist and I decided that in honor of this meeting I´ll perform some of my greates pieces...but I decided to give you a chance to win 500 pesos (around 50 bucks) I am going to present a very simple trick, and I challenge you to think your solution to it...the one that can tell me the exact method will win the money!!" everyone seems so happy!! and I proceed to the performance

During the mini show and can see that some of them tell their solutions, some of them are very skeptical and some of them really amazed!! I expected something like this... although it doesn´t bother me at all... since I have a nice surprise for them...

Then the time for the challenge arrives... and then I explain how the trick is "achieved" through patter and how I present it...nobody buys it... the trick is as follows...

"I can memorize the deck in a couple minutes..using mnemonics and then I put the deck down then I ask that anybody of you to cut the deck a couple times and then Instantly I know in which card you cut.." a lot of you might recognize this trick as the triple prediction using the one-ahead principle

I perform it as I said then everyone seems baffled...and then I tell them I am going to reveal it in order for them to perform it for friends and family...also because I need to prove them wrong...

Then I tell them to share their solutions...

I got some of the most funniest and imposible methods ever!! some of them actually think that I memorized in a couple seconds, some of them tell me that I count the cards in each pile, some of them tell me that the cards are marked, some of them tell me that got an agreement to the person that cut the cards...

Nobody got close to the real method, which is just knowing the top card of the deck, then using the one-ahead principle you "predict" the other cards...when I explain it...they really can´t believe it!! it was so simple... fortunately for me I got to keep my money in my wallet...

Anyway, they tell me that I was right, that sometime you need to think more simple...and that sometime they do try to appear smart than the other people and that I show them that being very intelligent...it´s not the same to being smart... and that they need to enjoy life, without having the answer to everything...

Anyway we all laugh and we continue the meeting and have a great time!!! I think I change their minds a little bit, and using an art that the thought it was for fooling them...but in reality they realize they enjoy more the mistery and the fun...that being a know-it all guys...

Thanks for the interesting read Luis. Many people over analyze things including myself at times. You are correct that many intelligent people "hate" to be fooled or told that their solution was incorrect. Others just sit back and absorb the magic and entertainment.
