I’ve been practicing the bottom deal for about a week. Despite my best efforts I still cannot buckle the bottom card. Is this common or am I likely missing something technique wise?
All of the above said, although we might be able to give you a few tips if you'd tell us which technique and grip you're using? Erdnase, a Mechanic's grip, Madison, ... ?
No matter which grip you're using, one important piece of advice: Make the grip your own. If you're using Erdnase, move your fingers a little bit to find a point at which it's most comfortable for you. Take a look at other performers and see how they hold the deck.
If you're using Erdnase, try moving first and second finger away from the corner and just a quarter of an inch towards the middle, so they don't lie exactly on the corners. This might help with the awkwardness.
If you're using a Mechanic's grip, experiment with moving your first finger on top of the deck a little bit.
Other than that, of course, practice, practice, practice. Don't get disheartened, if I remember correctly I needed a whole of two weeks until I got that d***ed bottom card loose the first time.
I second Gabriel's advice on the Jason England tutorial as well, it's helped me
a lot with this move.
Good luck and have fun!
