Cyril Interview - ENGLISH

Now you know why Singapore flourishers prefer flourishing to magic. The reactions =P

No offense to Cyril, but as great as he is with his effects and sleight of hand he doesn't have very good presentation.

He basically said here's two mints, ta da they are stuck together. He basically showed them a "look what I can do" trick and they reacted as such. Cyril is amazing but he is known for doing some impossible variations on many effects and gets his reactions off of those, not necessarily his overall performance.

I understand why he did that effect, however something that could have been played up a bit more would have worked far better.

David Blaine style actually. Quote forgot which magician in AOM : "I mean, he's just a guy standing there doing tricks"

As a Singaporean who do magic, I've found people to be generally unresponsive. Maybe it's the problem with my presentation, but last Wednesday, I went to this award ceremony where one part showed Jeremy Peh, an established magician in Singapore, perform tricks like Losander table and floating a woman. (I overheard people saying 'Wah, why he nly remove one chair arh? Sure something wrong with that chair one'). I thought he had a really good presentation for Losander table, but nobody seemed amazed or interested, "as if they see this everyday".

The only part of the magic that the audience enjoyed was the guillotine routine (Not sure about the actual name). Looks like we like to see people getting hurt =P

I am going to take a pretty safe guess and assume that you don't speak Japanese. If you did speak Japanese (and I don't mean 1 year of University level Japanese, but really KNEW Japanese), and knew about how Japanese people are, you would know that Cyril actually is a GREAT performer and knows how to cater to the Japanese people. As far as performing in other countries and for other people, it can be quite challenging. However, it is not enough for you to be able to claim that he is not good at presentation.

That is fine and dandy, however even when I see his appearances on japanese television I don't get a sense of any real substance in his presentation. You may disagree and that's fine, but when I have watched him it doesn't seem to really do any presentation at all.

This may be the japanese catering but where I live and I believe most people here want some substance, some human element or something.

All that said, he does some crazy and amazing effects which astonish everybody. I'm fairly sure if he did his other effects like hamburger out of menu, the card in cigarette box, those two would have been floored.

I am so with you on this TokyoUW. I love how Cyril brings back old effects and incorporates them to today's life. He is a very creative and amazing performer, a force not to be reckoned with! I can never forget the first time I have ever heard of him, when he pulled out a hamburger out of the menu! Such a signature effect!
