Discussion of special decks and tricks.

I'm sure nearly all magicians have seen or been introduced to different types of special decks like Invisible, blanks, etc. Some magicians really don't know what to do with them unless they read it in the book or some video. Perhaps some of us could discuss some tricks that we have invented or some variations from some older tricks. No exposing of newer tricks please.

Simple one I thought of was using a all blank deck and one other card such as 7 of spades (all red bikes) and writing "this is not the seven of spades" on each of the blanks. Simply put the actual 7 of spades on top and each time you spread the cards and place that one on top and do a double life to that audience member and only showing them. Put them back on top and simply place the one they chose in their hands closed, repeat the process and each one believes they have the 7 of spades.

You can mix it up here using different principles of mind reading, asking them to all name it aloud, etc. Then they all look at their cards being duped, you can palm the card off or do a special spread where they don't see the actual card and see that all the cards have the same thing written on them.

I have no idea whether or not this has been invented or not, but maybe this will help others with some creativity and spark something. A trick I reccomend is Alpha Deck if you don't mind using a gimmicked deck, from Richard Sanders and has powerful reactions. Good Luck.

Diamonds In The Rough

No Rough & Smooth!"

Advertisements for Magic tricks often make the above boast, implying that the undisclosed method used is superior to something as "Old Hat" as the rough-&-Smooth principle. While many gimmicked Card effects may benefit from an alternative method, it's often the case that the effect in question could be improved by the use of roughing fluid. At any rate, to denigrate one of the most versatile, deceptive, subtle, insidious, invisible principles of Card Magic is ludicrous. Certainly Marlo & Vernon knew this, which is why they each created miracles utilising the principle.

I imagine Magic dealers know how to sell their products. The typical purchaser may yearn for the latest thing, & be disappointed to learn that the principle used in an effect is a familiar one - but to discount a trick because it uses the rough-&-smooth principle is possibly to miss out on some very effective Magic. Like the double lift, the principle is a utility. The fact that the principle is a mechanical one, & can be considered "self-working" has tainted its reputation. In the right environment it is devastating.

Working with rough-&-smooth as a secret partner should not be a source of shame. Having "something" the audience is unaware of is one of the most basic principles of Magic. Certainly, sleight-of-hand mixed with gaffs is a potent combination.

Food for thought.

I understand your point, a bit random. Some times it may not be simply boasting but instead of those who are not particularly fond of that method. I dislike the invisible deck a great deal, however I don't mind the rough and smooth method, without exposing a certain trick uses the rough and smooth but as a fixed prediction effect.

If I can use a different method than the rough and smooth then I probably will check it out and see what reviews have to say about it. Preferences and how comfortable you are with the method/effect makes a big difference.

Well this is pretty basic but for those who have a double backer and don't know how to use it, here is one method.

Start with the double backer on top, and say, pick any card you want, as you spread them.
When they have the card, control it to the top, it doesn't matter where the double backer is anymore. When it is on top say something like "All the cards are face down" as you spread them face down. Then, collect them and turn the pack over and snap your fingers or something, then spread them again, and this time, it will look as though one card is reversed. take it out, turn the cards over again and put it on the top. Ask them what their card is and when they say, do a double lift to show them their card. You can then remove it showing it is one card as the other one is a double backer and will blend in on the top.

Anyway, just a simple little trick.
