Is exposure good?

Ive been thinking about this for a couple of days and I can't seem to come up with an answer maybe you can help.

Say someones illegally download a magic video that otherwise you wouldn't have bought. And it needs a gimmick that has to be bought. Now here is the question, if the person bought a gimmick that he might not have the company still made money that they wouldn't of had thus the company benefits. Would it be better for the company to at least make a small sale or not one at all? I know it is a bit tricky but I would love to hear everyone's opinion.

What you're talking about is illegal downloading, not exposure. Exposure is the intentional revealing of the secrets to magic effects. While illegal downloading does result in exposure it isn't the same thing.

To answer your question, in my opinion it would be better for the company to make a sale of the gimmick.

If we assume that the person who downloaded the video was not going to buy it even if it was not available as an illegal download(as you state in your post) then the magic company has not lost anything. However they have gained from the sale of the gimmick which they would not have sold if the video wasn't available to download.

If this was the case then illegal downloading wouldn't really effect anybody but the real situation is somewhat different. There are people who choose the illegal download instead of buying the DVD. If it wasn't available to download then they would have bought it, in this case the the magic company has lost money.

If the second type of person (downloads instead of buying) outnumbers the first type of person (who wouldn't buy it anyway) then the company is losing money, if the first type of person outnumbers the second then the magic company would actually be gaining money from the illegal downloads.

I strongly suspect that many people choose to download instead of buying the DVD, if this is true then illegal downloading is probably significantly reducing the profits of magic companies.

My post is based purely on profit, it could be argued that illegal downloading also contributes to a lack of respect for magic companies and for the creators and could reduce the number of effects available in the future. Although this would be purely speculation, not something that could have a definitive answer.

I suppose maybe putting up a magic dvd up for download is the exposure he's talking about

Illegal to download copyrighted material. Full stop. I wouldn't like someone to download my magic effect DVD which I have paid for, created, took time to make, plan, and all the background behind it, for some rude magician to just download it illegally because he does not respect the art.

Going on about how it's unethical, disrespectful etc etc is completely missing the point. There's an endless amount of threads about how it's wrong and illegal, we know and there's nothing we can do about it.

The original poster was saying that in some cases everybody may actually benefit from illegal downloading, at least in the short term, this doesn't justify it but it is an interesting observation.

wow, you will have to make your self a little bit clearer. i don't understand a thing.

Probably because you posted 2 minutes after me, you couldn't possibly have properly read my post and attempted to understand it in that time.

I admit it does appear a bit confusing at first but if you read it properly it makes sense.
