So I thought I'd write an overview of my show to see what things I needed to improve in the future and maybe get some advice from the audience members as well as my friends and family. So my former English teacher hired me to perform a show for his New Year Eve's gathering, there were approximately 20 kids and 30 adults but he told me that the show will be geared mainly towards the little kids. The show starts at 7:30pm and I arrived exactly at 7:00pm to set things up and meet with a few people. So without further a due, let me now summarize all the effects that I did, the kid's reaction, and the improvement that I needed to improve. I think writing it down make me think more about my show and for future reference in order to improve the show. I will also rate the audience's reactions from the scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best). I realize that not a lot of people do this but I think this helps me to highlight the memorable moments in my show.
Fiber Optics (Full Routine): This is the first routine that I've performed after I walked up. At first I was thinking of only doing the Professor's Nightmare part but then my client asked me to perform the whole routine. At first I thought that the kids will lose attention halfway through the routine but to my surprise, they were really into it. They love the part where the ends come off and where the ropes were the same sixe. Overall great routine the kids and the adults loved it! 8/10
Daryl's Acrobatic Knot: Not much to say about this effect the kids and the adults seemed to enjoy this effect more than the fiber optics routine. I made this routine fun for the children and they especially love the knot fusing onto the red rope in the end. 9/10
Rising Okito Voodoo Doll: As some of you here may know, this is my favorite close up effect ever, I literally performed this effect over 600 times over the past three months. In the show, I created a presentation about how the scarecrow scare the crows away due to the fact that they look and act like a human being. I let three kids participate in wiggling their hands up and down and snap their fingers to make the doll fall down. The kids were all laughing and smiling and the adults in the back were absolutely astounded, I seriously love the reactions! One adult even came up to me after the show and asked me where I attached the string. When I told him that there's no strings, he literally told me that he will hired me just for this effect. 10/10
Hyrum the Haunted Hanky: I asked the kids if they wash their hair everyday and asked them a reason why they should wash their hair. I then pretend to take off a flea from their hair and put it in the center of the hanky and cover it up. When the hanky starts to rise up and then jump right off the table, the kids screamed! Overall, a very fun effect with a fun presentation. 8/10
20th Century Silks I use a time traveling presentaion for this effect. The best part about this effect is when I used a change bag to caused one of the kids to not be able to find the silk but the other one can. Everybody really had a blast with me on this routine. 7/10
Slush Powder Routine: I invite one of the kids to help me in a little game of catching the water. I asked the kid to turned around and told her that I will pour water into one of the cups and she has to guessed which cup the water is in. Unknown to her but known to the audience, I poured the water into all of the cups but in the end, the cup that she choose was the only cup with water in it! The audience were more impressed than her! The kid actually peeked so I askd her to turned around again and I mixed the cups some more, very funny though:) 8/10
Bogus Bubble Gum: I asked one of the kids if they would like to have a bubble gum stretching contest with me. I, of course stretch the gum about 25 feet while the volunteer only managed to stretch only 3 cm. One of the kids though realized that the gum that I was pulling out was not real and called out in front of everyone. I replied, "Oh, it's real!" and quickly thanks the volunteer for helping me and continue on with the next effect. next time I'll use this on myself instead of calling up a volunteer. 2/10
Flower Box Production: I used a Mother's day presentation which I won't go into as much because I really love the patter but the kids and the adults were really into it and all try to participate! 9/10
Dove Pan Production/Breakaway wand/Silk to cane: This routine is great, I made all the chocolates appear in the end. The kids don't really seem to react as much to the breakaway wand like I've seen in other videos but they were really surprised on the appearing cane. 9/10
Dirty hand Towel: before the kids eat the chocolate I told them to wipe their hands and then a bunch of hand prints appear on a previously cleaned towel. The kids were surprised! 8/10
No Tear newspaper/8 ft appearing Wand: I forgot to use the 8 ft wand in the previous effect so I'd thought I used it here and asked the kids to tap the newspaper with a magic wand in order to restore it. The presentation that i used is very engaging and the kids and adults were really surprised at the visual of the restoration. 9.5/10
After the 30 minute show, I let one of the kids who was really into magic performed a couple effects of his own and then I gather a small group of kids and adults and did a little close up show for them. As Rick Everhart said, give them more what they paid for, and I did. I left with $50 and a plate of food and a smile of happiness on my face.
Here are some photos from the show if you'd like to see them!

Nicely Done Pete....Love the pictures as well. You are doing a great job and you can see the children loved it. It should make you proud and happy.
Those are the types of pictures with parent testimonials that will land you more gigs than anything else. I promise you. You hand potential clients a business cards with your link to your website with those photos and good testimonials...and 75 percent of your work is done.

Bogus Bubble Gum plays better from a distance like on stage. I normally use different colored gum for each child. Blue, Green, Yellow, and then mine is the only pink one so it doesnt' clash with regular pink gum. From a distance it is still funnier than heck and kids laugh like crazy.

Good Reflection and I liked the fact that you, "Gave them more than they paid for."

Great job! Good to hear it all went well. I'm trying to put together a kid's show, and the material you listed here has given me some inspiration; it's not all sponge balls and color changing books. Although those are good, the presentations you had allowed the kids to relate, and that's what makes magic hit; relatibility. Thanks for sharing!

P.S: That's a fresh vest, I must say haha

Fantastic. Great Job. And good job dressing for the part. You look professional, and that's important. You are on your way indeed. And Rick was right about your pictures - excellent. It's been a while since I've seen a kids show. Those pictures make me want to see yours!

Rick: Thank you very much again for your help to make this show a success, I can't thank you enough! Yes, I read in the instructions and it also told you to use different colored gums, the thing is that I can't find anything other than pink gums in the store that I went to. I'll stop doing this effect for a while until I can find them. One question, do you have to get permission from someone before you post their quotes on their website? Also, how do you get testimonials, do you film them speaking about your show or ask them to write down what they think of the show?
Jacob: Thanks Jacob, you made my day hearing that I help you in some way:) I like to stay away from those typical kid show materials and try something new that not a lot of people have seen before. Thank you too about the vest, I have three of the same vests and tie but the other two are in red and white.
Justin: Thank you for the compliment, I'm so glad you liked the outfit, it's been taking me quite a while to find the right style and size for me. Do you do kid shows yourself Justin? I have some footage here and there during my show, maybe I'll post them here in this thread later on. All I can tell you right now is that the kids were laughing and cheering ALL the way throughout the show, there was no silence at all!

No, I don't really do kids shows. I have a 30 minute show that I've used in the past, but I don't have what it takes to do kid shows well. David Kaye has some great resources. Taught me a lot about playing for kids.

No problem Pete. Here is what I have been doing in the past, but may switch to video testimonials in the future.
I have the client email me 3-5 digital pictures a few days after the show and a little 3-4 sentence testimonial of my show to put on my website. I usually give a few examples of the testimonials so they have an idea of what to do.
