Say What? - Alexander Vornoff

I love to read performance theory, other people's perspectives, thoughts and vision.

I've have this manuscript for a number of months and have read over it a few times. This is a collection of thoughts from someone who seems very clued into what's needed to create a WHOLE character.

There are four chapters making up the manuscript, the first is on scripting, the second on character, the third is on performance as a whole and the forth concludes nicely with thoughts on putting together your character and creating the best show you can while remaining true to yourself.

A great little tool is added as a supplement to the manuscript, it's a form which you are to print and fill out, allowing you to put ideas down - It can really take writing something down for it to become clear in your own mind, so this is a valuable asset to the book.

Alex is selling these direct from his site: www.witchinghourproductions.com

I think everyone should have a look at these works, it's not too drawn out a read, perfect for anyone looking to begin clearing up any internal conflicts on their style or the persona they adapt while performing.

I look forward to hearing more people's thoughts on this as the author (Steerpike) is often praised for the waves he causes on these very forums.

Best,

D.

I don't like his patter and his performing style:
"If I do this and that, then what happens?"

I only do that for the sponge ball routine, actually. So my guess is that you didn't watch the whole video. Regardless, I don't see what that has to do with the content of the book.

Incidentally, I don't want to sound like a broken record, but I really hate the word patter. What is it going to take for magicians to stop using such a god awful word?

Anyone could get use out of this

Depends entirely on whether or not they bother to use the information therein.

Just watched the video, and all I have to say is, what a handsome guy there, eh?

EDIT: not you steerpike the guy next to you

I've heard about the Say What? book from the E forums, but checking your site, I noticed ads for other books you have coming out.

Exalt of the Weird

Bizarre magick proliferates the underground of the magic world, but is seldom seen by everyday audiences. Alexander's first treatise on the performance theory of bizarre magick is aimed at bringing a breath of fresh air to the genre via analyses of urban legends, Jungian psychology, and American pulp literature among other subjects. Witness an exalt of the weird.

Yes. Definitely getting this.

Encyclopedia of The Shadowland

The Shadowland is Alexander's domain. His life's work in magic and mentalism. Within the pages of this text is full documentation of the phenomena observed in the Shadowland, scholarly theory, and a history of the near-forgotten Shadowlander tradition. It is a window into another world.

I'd like to know more about this. The blurb makes it sound like an In-Character look at your presentation style and the world you've sculpted around it - am I far off base, there? Do you talk about how to craft a similar mythos with our own works?

Wow. Six years of hard work building up a positive self-image, and you're working hard to tear it down. And I thought we were friends.

Exalt of the Weird is actually being bumped up to next month instead of May. Night and Day is being shelved. I'm not happy with the way it's turning out, and as much as I would like your money, I would rather not get it by releasing a sub-par product to a market that already has too much of that.

The Encyclopedia of the Shadowlands is indeed an in-character dissertation on my mythos. It's going to take me a lot of hours to put it together, but it will be available to both magicians and non-magicians alike and will be released as a print copy as well as an ebook.

Topics covered will range from the properties of garlic, what ghosts are, how the phases of the moon affect breaches between our world and the Shadowlands, and the influence of Shadowlanders in history (i.e. a popular theory about the origin of many Japanese myths about the shinobi).
