How does black magic work to ruin someone?

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough on the nature of the study. The tests were standardized intelligence tests administered by the psychologist who ran the study so their was no room for teacher bias in grading. The effect of expectation on performance has become known as "the Pygmalion Effect", and...

How does black magic work to ruin someone?

Your story is a bit different from the study I mentioned. You're talking about one person who consistently out-performed their group of friends. I'm talking about a group of randomly selected students who, to a statistically significant degree, out-performed their classmates simply by dint of...

How does black magic work to ruin someone?

Without wanting to be overly harsh, I don't think taking a Guy Ritchie film as some kind of educational resource is a sensible idea. You can't even learn about Sherlock Holmes from watching Sherlock Holmes. Depending on how you define it, "black magic" could certainly be seen as real. As I...

    My Thoughts on Pirating Magic

I'd argue that the remuneration in that case is the goodwill of potential customers.

    My Thoughts on Pirating Magic

If you think that the dictionary definition of a word is its actual meaning then you have no business using the word "philosophy", in my opinion. Oh, I see, you're just copying and pasting Wikipedia. How ironic in a thread about stealing other people's work! The concept of "value" is...

    Beginner on the Bottom Dealing

No. The push-off of the top and bottom cards happen simultaneously so if you're putting pressure on the top of the deck then the push-off is likely to look unnatural. Too much pressure being applied will slow down the push-off and the pull-back.

    Beginner on the Bottom Dealing

Erdnase himself (herself? themselves?) flags up this problem. With practice it goes away, though. It's about delicate control of the muscles and tendons of your hand, in a way which is very hard to describe so the best I can say is, keep practicing. You will get it.

    Mentalism/Think of a card effect

It doesn't. Seriously. It's on his Devil's Picturebook DVD. I imagine you could create a variation which did use suggestion but the trick as described doesn't require any suggestion.

    Mentalism/Think of a card effect

Smoke doesn't use any pre-show. It's on his Devil's Picturebook DVDs and it's just his "psychological" presentation of ideas from Tom Mullica and John Kennedy.

    Double Lift

You know there are a lot of reputable online magic retailers, also you'll find a lot of basic magic books in most libraries. I would recommend saving up and buying The Royal Road to Card Magic. I'm not exactly sure of the exchange rate, but it won't be any more than about ten to fifteen Canadian...

    Mentalism/Think of a card effect

Really? I think you're thinking of a different trick. Dai Vernon's "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" is a classic in this area. Also check out the work of Dani Da Ortiz.

    'Real' Magic

Some of the most successful magicians have blurred the line between reality and illusion. In the nineteenth century, some illusionists pretended they'd mastered some interesting and little-understood phenomenon of magnetism or electricity. Houdini's performances suggested he had an innate skill...

    Why haven't we yet?

I think the reason we haven't got a really famous magic parody act is because we've got very few really famous magicians. Most of the jokes would be very "in", and therefore wouldn't have mass appeal. The five or six really recognisable magicians don't comprise enough of a repertoire for a...

    table routine

If you don't know the answer to that then you shouldn't be taking bookings. Sorry to be harsh but would you take bookings as a pianist and then post on a forum asking for advice on how to play the piano?

Brian Tudor... where is him now?

I don't think it's feasible for someone to maintain that level of genuine anger throughout the stop-start logistical process of filming a DVD. Either he's genuinely mentally ill and everyone else involved in the production was complicit in exploiting him, or, which is more likely, he was well...

Don't you think he might have been in character? Also, do you think Jerry Sadowitz is a detriment to the art?

    Help with Interview Questions!!!

Hi Steven. You've got an opportunity here to build a character and create some excitement about yourself, so don't waste it. All of your answers should be focused on intriguing your potential audience, drawing them in, and attracting more people to the event. If people turn up at the event...

    What did Dai Vernon Influence?

Just to clarify that, the idea of holding two cards so they appears "at some little distance" to be one is in The Merry Companion, La Magie Blanche Devoilee, Modern Magic, New Era Card Tricks, and The Expert at the Card Table. However, none of these sources give a method for removing the double...
