    About Thumb cut

The way I do it is as follows: 1. Take the deck in normal mechanics or dealing grip. 2. Regrip the deck with thumb on top and fingertips below. 3. Move the deck about 1 cm towards the fingertips. 4. Tilt the deck up towards your thumb with your fingertips. 5. Reach over the deck with your...

    About Thumb cut

I think most people will have experienced this problem when learning the cut, so you're not alone. An early reference to it in the literature (Robert-Houdin's Secrets of Conjuring and Magic, to be precise) is as a one-hand shift, where it's actually described as impossible with short fingers. I...

    New Utility Move! Help Needed!

Look into a few versions of Triumph and I'm sure you'll see the potential of the move. I'd be careful about claiming it as original, though, because it's not dissimilar to other things that are already around. Good work on discovering it for yourself though!

    Mnemonic

I think your best bet would be to keep an eye on eBay or second-hand book websites. I got my copy for around $50. I should say, that's not the 1994 Kaufman and Greenberg reprint which does go for hundreds, but an edition of the original version which contains the chapter you want but is much...

What performances give you your inspiration?

I genuinely think Derren Brown is one of the best performers I've seen in any art-form. You know people say that every time you read Erdnase you can find new things? In the same way, I can watch Derren Brown's shows and keep learning new things about effective performance. Ricky Jay's been a...

    Center Deal

Maybe take some time to practice dealing alternating tops and centres. I think that's the quickest route to minimising any hesitation.

    Center Deal

As I'm sure you know there was a bit of unnecessary fumbling with the deck before you started dealing which was an obvious tell, and there was a hesitation after you dealt the first card. If I were you I'd slow everything down and practice the whole sequence of cutting, reassembling the deck and...

    Is this an original trick?

Oh, are we specifically talking about submitting effects to The Wire? My answer related to publishing a trick in general.

    Is this an original trick?

Not really, but why wouldn't you get in touch with Lee Asher about it anyway? It's a nice, friendly, polite thing to do and maybe he'll give you permission to teach his move in full anyway. Maybe he'll love your trick and give you an extra little tip that makes it better, or maybe he'll give you...

    Is this an original trick?

Yes. Most magicians are quite easy to get in touch with. Oz Pearlman's email address is on his website and Patrick Kun has a contact form on his.

    Credits for a move.

Yes it does. There's certainly a peek similar to the one Foppa21 described in it, but I'm not sure if it's exactly what he has in mind. If I remember rightly, Derren Brown uses it in his Doublethink routine on The Devil's Picturebook.

    Credits for a move.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a resource listing all card moves, given that there are many thousands of them, and new ones being created all the time. Having said that, Denis Behr's made some pretty good inroads here. For peeks check out Richard Busch's Peek Performances and Peek Encores...

    Changes

It's in Ed Marlo's Side Steal booklet which is part of Revolutionary Card Technique. Or, it's taught on Jay Noblezada's Color Changes DVD, and as part of a four-card production on Dan and Dave's Pasteboard Animations which is on their The System DVD. EDIT: Just realised you probably meant the...

Who is your favorite magician? card man?

I'm going to be predictable and say Dai Vernon. Anything I do in magic owes a debt to his work and ideas. If we're talking about living magicians, though, Dani Da Ortiz and Lennart Green are definitely up there. Probably Ricky Jay should get a mention too.

    Card Culling

Kostya Kimlat is the best I've seen at this technique, and The Road Runner Cull goes massively in-depth into everything you need to know, including timing, misdirection, and framing as well as the move itself. Plus, you get to learn his Culligula Triumph (my absolute favourite Triumph routine)...

    Misdirection

Do you mean Expert Card Technique? In addition, I second the work of Slydini and Tamariz. Also, Greg Wilson is a master of misdirection, so check him out.

Cardistry may be a good convincer for card magic

    Ah, it might have been.

Cardistry may be a good convincer for card magic

Absolutely agree. I posed that question to Mr Nyman with exactly this kind of idea in mind. By the way, for anyone who thinks that flourishes detract from magic, I refer you to Peter Lamont's research he presented at the EMC stating that simple flourishes before an ACR increased its impact. This...
