Card College Vol. 1-5 by Robert Giobbi. It's filled with different sleights, performance guides and etc. The price shouldn't be that expensive and vol. 1 starts from beginners to vol. 5 which is more difficult.

I agree with Caesar Da Mystifier, it all depends on how you perform an effect to get great reactions and not the effect itself. Well.... this might be kinda off topic for an effect, but a good book for performance is Maximum Entertainment by Ken Webber. For an effect, you can get the DVD...

Well.... Witness is most preferably first because of its set up. I guess you can do witness then take youngd94's advice and let them have the card signed. For me, Indecent will hit them harder than witness because they see the zip lock bag to be empty so... I guess you start of with Witness then...
