    Your First Performance

My first performance was with my (former) mentor. It was after hours in his restaurant, and he was sitting with some of his extended family members when he called me over. We sat there for over an hour entertaining them with card tricks and some coin magic. I was nervous at first but after my...

I'm new to magic, any advice?

No, they'll discover that for themselves one day. That way they're breaking their own hearts.

I'm new to magic, any advice?

If Theory 11 sold books I would probably shove all my money into this site. I began with a mentor, then got a DVD, then tried YouTube. When I decided that I wanted to be a better magician I avoided YouTube like the plague. Buying books and learning from DVDs are a much better learning...

Too late, I've already saved my edit :P

    Wikipedia Exposure

My edit so far: In the first round of dealing face-down cards, all of the cards dealt will be of various colours in a situation that only the magician can know. Therefore, memorization is required, and a great deal of practice. It is up to the magician how he directs the spectator to deal...

    Wikipedia Exposure

If we can't prevent exposure on YouTube, I would imagine it to be just as difficult to prevent it on Wikipedia...Unless we all go in and edit the articles and post "fake exposures".

    Bobo Coin Magic

I have the videos, but I haven't looked into them all that much. I started with Expert Coin Magic Made Easy with David Roth. I don't have any books on coin magic apart from Harry Lorayne's The Magic Book, so I think I'll invest in Bobo's book as soon as I can. What are some routines in Bobo that...

    prom magic

What a concept! Tie magic! Perfect for this type of event! In that case, card on tie could be a great addition (if you don't mind having cards all over the place).

I'm new to magic, any advice?

Anytime, friend. Of course there is always magic DVD's for step by step instruction, as well as advice from professional magicians which is invaluable. Some people learn better through watching so you may want to look into that as well. I started with Easy to Master Card Miracles with Michael...

I'm new to magic, any advice?

Absolutely. Unless you are very dedicated to working with cards in this context, put off this book until you have firm grasp on the basics. But who knows, you could be the next Dai Vernon; who memorized the book by 12 years old. That was one of the tricks that worried me the most on Sunday...

I'm new to magic, any advice?

The best way to keep a magic trick a secret is to put in writing after all xD So going into old books to find these hidden gems is a thrill (for me at least).

I'm new to magic, any advice?

I imagine a lot of the people who scoff at the YouTube magicians only do so because they reveal marketed effects. Disturb Reality is probably the biggest one those revealers. But magicians who reveal their own effects is perfectly okay because it is is their own material (ex: Jay Sankey), not to...

I'm new to magic, any advice?

Practising false shuffles and table cuts is an excellent way to gain finesse and skill with a packet of playing cards (as long as you are practising the move correctly). I do these for literally hours on end. It's become my therapy, practically. Expert Card Technique is definitely a must have...

I'm new to magic, any advice?

Typically a deck with an air cushion finish is better for magic, but you can do magic with any deck. It's actually more powerful if you're able to do a trick with a spectators borrowed deck. Since you are a beginner, get a copy of The Royal Road to Card Magic. You'll learn practical sleights not...

    prom magic

Dean pretty much hit the nail on the head with this one. You should also look up Counterfeit by Wayne Houchin. It is, in my opinion, the best TnR out there because you can step into the crowd and have them closely watch as you heal the card, and at the end you can hand out the card as a souvenir.
