I agree with you 100% -- spelling, grammar, and vocabulary lay the foundation for respect at home or on the stage. Blatantly not trying to check for proper grammar and correct spelling shows a lack of effort and carelessness, which, in turn, leaves the reader with a sense gratuitousness...
