Performing Card Tricks for Children's Show?

@obrienmagic, although you main points are correct, I'm not sure your examples are that strong. As for telling engaging stories, stories about magicians are never entertaining or able to cause an emotional investment. Also, telling a stranger that love needs to be shared and they shouldn't...

Performing Card Tricks for Children's Show?

I think that makes you one of the best paid magicians around :) I love it. You need to have a silk streamer to pull out of its mouth! I've done card to rubber chicken and I'm still working on my Rubber Chicken Zig Zag effect.

How to get cards ready for riffle stacking?

No. I was speaking in terms of a magic trick or gambling "demonstration." To do a set up during a game is difficult. I know there is some good work out there by Marlo and Fulves on setting up, but I'm not familiar with the techniques.

Performing Card Tricks for Children's Show?

Probably not. It would be viewed as a challenge and I think the kids would be inclined to grab the props once they got frustrated. Better to do a color monte routine where the magician is explaining what happened to him.

How to get cards ready for riffle stacking?

    1. Look through the deck under the guise of seeing if all the cards are there and cull the aces to the top. 2. Pull the aces out and put them on the table. Insert them into different parts of the deck and control to the top using a multiple shift. 3. John Gustaferro's Either Or from One...

    New magician needs help

Josh, welcome to magic and welcome to the forums. For learning, the best place to start is a book called Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. It has a little bit of everything - cards, coins, bills, rope, cups and balls, sponge balls, mentalism and stage magic. You can learn a lot about...

    Reading Books

It depends. My ability to acquire books far exceeds my ability to read through the books. I tend to be reading through two or three books at the same time. Currently, it is Aretology of Vanni Bossi, Guy Hollingsworth Drawing Room Deceptions, and T.A. Water's Mind Myth and Magic. When I read...

    What to buy?

I'm glad you enjoyed the visit and RCT is a great book that gives insight into Ed Marlo's thinking. I actually had to call Magic Inc. yesterday to see if they could get me a copy of Marlo's Advanced Fingertip Control (which is not reprinted in RCT) for a project I'm working on.

MAGIC REVIEW: "Ninja Plus" by Matthew Garrett

The first routine ("Deck of Missed Opportunities") in the book is beautiful. The section on the cat ("Rossini's Insight") really does make you think about the effect of motion and attention on your sleights. The breakdown of card controls is thought provoking (and, I think applicable to card...

    Where do you perform?

My performances are typically parlor magic performances for groups from 20 to 200. I've performed in front of audiences where the chairs are lined up in rows and for audiences spread out over a bunch of tables in banquet halls. Those shows are done standing up with a table for props behind me...

    Impromptu mentalism books?

@Arif Ammirul - To do the good stuff, you have to put in some effort. Get a copy of Anneman's The Jinx. I think it is available if you set up a free subscription to Ask Alexander. You can also buy a PDF of it at the Conjuring Arts Research Center or Lybrary.com. For around $15 (or FREE if...

MAGIC REVIEW: "Ninja Plus" by Matthew Garrett

I do see the possibilities with the Plus. I guess I'm too set in my routine. I also agree with what you are saying about options in routining. My 12 inch set has a L***ing K** in addition to the standard. Although I can easily convince the audience they have seen and examined both rings...

MAGIC REVIEW: "Ninja Plus" by Matthew Garrett

I had a chance to watch a couple of the videos on the "plus" part which is the finger ring. I'll be honest, for me, I don't see a significant advanage to the "plus." The standard Ninja rings, four ring set are just awesome. I learned the routine from Shoot Ogawa (although I still can't do the...

    Taking cards on flights?

The click is from a change in humidity and temperature. The outside of the cards absorb/ lose humidity faster than the inside of the cards. Often, just spreading the deck around on a table for a night is enough for the clock bend to disappear.

    What to buy?

Wow, Magic Inc.! Started by Laurie Ireland and run by Jay Marshall and Frances Ireland Marshall. Ask them about the history of the store. Tell them what you like and they will have lots of suggestions. How about Ed Marlo's work? Maybe pick up Revolutionary Card Technique (they published the...

    Advanced, amazing card-magic book?

Card College. Royal Road was published in 1948. It is dated in the way it is written and more difficult to understand. I think that Card College is the best way to learn - especially if you get a copy in German.
