Help! Does anyone know a way to learn magic for free besides YouTube?

Try going to your local library and checking out the magic books at 793.8. You will be surprised what you find. If you have some money, try books like Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic (around $15) ], Royal Road to Card Magic (around $10), Bobo's Modern Coin Magic (around $10), Expert...

    Shaking?

There are a lot of crazy uncles out there who perform card tricks and pull coins out of ears. But Uncle Jim took the crazy uncle thing to a new level. He was very uhh… mystical. Every night he would go to his “magic” room in the basement with all his magic books, sit in his lazy-boy chair and...

    Gig Tips

With the exception of busking, those seem to be the main types of magic performance. Table hopping is where you perform for one table after another at a restaurant.

I started when I was... almost twice as old as Justin.

The History of the Cardini Change

The reference to a control is to George Pughe's Pass which is in the 1994 expanded edition of John Northern Hilliard's Greater Magic (the More Greater Magic section). Pughe's Pass is explained in a January 21, 1933 letter to Hilliard and is said to be a one card version of the Houdini-Elliot...

The History of the Cardini Change

The first publication of Cardini's Snap Change is in Jean Hugard's Card Manipulations, Volume 3 in 1934. That method used the left ring finger. It is also found in Stephen Minch's Spectical in 1980 but it is done on a card case. A variation was published in The Magic of Michael Ammar in 1991...

    New to the site

Eric Jones' "Metal" videos are a great place to start. Dan Watkin's has a great website at coinvanish.com that covers a lot of basics. Dan also has a video call Coin Man Walking. I was fortunate to learn coin the basics from Eric, Dan and Kainoa Hardbottle at a workshop. You haven't looked...

    Shaking?

Tyler's post is good advice. Let me add one thing... Shaking can often be reduced by having a set effect and presentation to beging with and by getting positive feedback. If you are performing for a small group, have your first effect planned and scripted. When you write the script, have it...

    Gig Tips

I think it is important to decide what type of "gig" you want. Table hopping, kids birthday parties, adult parlor shows, stage shows, trade shows, entertaining during coctail paties. Then develop your routines and your show. Only then should are you ready to figure out how to sell your services.

    Fool us card routine

It is Woody Aragon's effect. It is the first effect in his A Book in English. Tamariz's influence is evident. Eric Jomes performed this for a bunch of us at a lecture - it was amazing. Verbal Magic is a great book. Paradise Found (I think that is the name) is one of my favorite effects to...

    Workflow In Magic

Start with Peter McCabe's Scripting Magic. Peter's book is great reference with a lot of good scripts from well known magicians. I also recommend Larry Haas's "Transformations: Creating Magic Out of Tricks" which provides a good reference of how to go from doing tricks to presenting full...

Questions on Karl Fulves Self-Working Card Tricks

All of the effects use a normal deck or a packet of cards from a normal deck. Also, don't abandon the use of gimmicks so quickly. Remember, the spectator never sees the gimmick. Focus on what the spectator sees, not what the magician knows.

    Workflow In Magic

I developed a new show about a year and a half ago. I started out with some the effects I wanted to perform. I had always wanted to do a linking rings to an Orchestral Version of Fireflies, I wanted to do a routine where a card disappeared from a deck and reappeared into a bottle, I wanted to...

    Patter

In a word, yes. If you want more words, keep on reading. First off, I don't like the word patter. Patter is defined as "to say or speak in a rapid or mechanical manner; to speak or sing rapid-fire words in a theatrical performance." I prefer the word "presentation." From a techincal...

2 Questions on the Royal Road to Card Magic book

The Double Undercut can be found in The Magic of LePaul, which is a very good and inexpensive book. It also is in the Stars of Magic book which is more expensive but is a beautiful piece of history packed with classic routines.

Questions on Karl Fulves Self-Working Card Tricks

I'll start off by saying that I love Scarne on Card Tricks and think that is the best value. It may be that Scarne's book was one of the first books I got and I still perform effects from it. Karl Fulves work is wonderful - both the published self working stuff to the rare manuscripts on...
