I wouldn't think that a strong magician, by definition, would have weak effects, no? I know what you're saying. That's fair enough - the above comment is just playing advocate. Anyway, you know my feeling, so I won't continue. It is of course your liberty to pick and choose from the advice...

Effects don't kill, magicians kill. Just putting that out there.

Seconded re: Patrick Redford. And yes, John Born has a good book on the subject. I think the presentation discussion was most useful to me. We have this brilliant, legendary effect, but it's useless if we don't present it right.

Yeah. I would be surprised if they were markedly different from the previous ones, though, in terms of looks. And I hear you about goth jokers. The result is 12 year old punks with baseball caps on backwards thinking they look "hardcore".

Control is one of those effects that you have to have maturity to perform. Choosing when to perform it is so important. If you can't pull off the seriousness needed for a pulse stop effect, then don't bother. If you can, then it's fantastic.

The thing that comes to mind straight away is a light grip. The harder you grip the cards, the more friction there will be, and the greater the snap sound will be. But unless you're performing in a silent room, it shouldn't matter that much anyway.

Alright, there are several different answers that come to mind. First and most importantly: Why are they asking to see the deck anyway? Yeah, there are some people who are just naturally like that. But these people are few and far between. I can't tell you the number of times I've seen someone...

eBay is always a good bet for cards. Not least of which because of shipping.

The one I perform is a personal mix of some half a dozen or so different routines whose methods I've combined. Mostly because I can't pass for crap :P The Mnemonica CAAN is a good building block. If you start from there using that principle, you can combine several other card magic principles...

I'm not convinced they're anything special - I mean, the Shadow Masters were nice design wise, as were BGs, Vipers, etc. The design is certainly nice I think, but so were the designs of the above. I grabbed two to try out, but I have a feeling I'm sticking with S&Ms for performances.
