My Busking Experience (4th Week In)

Guardian, Glad to hear you are out there doing it man. I love hearing about busking / performance stories. You grow so much from each performance. Nobody believes me until they start doing it. The knowledge you gain is so valuable. Nothing you gain from books / dvds. Keep it up man...

So... What do laymen commonly think of us?

Ajohnson has it fairly close to how I've been viewed. Most people my grandparents age 75-80 and my parents age 55, when they hear the word "magician" they instantly think of the old classic style of tuxedo, top hat, rabbits, magic wand, rope tricks, etc. Most people my age 31 down to high...

Kids Party with a huge age difference! Just got back.

Thanks Danny. I was going to PM you how the show went but I figured other members may want to read about the performance as well. I normally don't use fire in my kids shows. Just wiregrams and flash paper with the adults and teens. I have color changing silks but thought the older kids...

Kids Party with a huge age difference! Just got back.

Spongeballs would have been ok for today however I do not have a good routine down yet. I know I know...by now 8 years in magic and you would have thought I would have done sponge balls. Simplicity and Color does hit hard...but...the age range was age 3 to age 11 or 12. What the 3 - 5 year...

    I am feeling despondent.

Pirating DVD's and illegally downloading may keep some of these rookie magicians happy and they may think they are "truly" doing magic, but until they step out into the crowds and learn by actually performing...they aren't helping themselves become better. Books and DVDs and lecture notes...

Kids Party with a huge age difference! Just got back.

Wow...I just performed at my toughest b-day party to date. Keep in mind I have done about 5 other birthday parties and about 5 adult private gigs. There were about 15 children who ranged from age 3 to age 12. Talk about trying to keep everyone's attention. This was a challenge. The other...

Why I don't perform for drunks.

    That is funny...and true...ha ha.

Why I don't perform for drunks.

This is why you have the "drunk spectator" and all spectators for that matter...show the card around the room / bar to at least 2 other people. This elliminates the spectator changing their card on you even when you know you forced the card.

Why I don't perform for drunks.

To add to Jack's post...I will also mention that when people are drunk that their attention spans are about 10 seconds long so you need to keep it simple and fast like color changes and what not. Or.....just don't even perform for them if they cannot enjoy the effects. On the other hand...

    Pcp

I would like to see live performances as well as reviews afterwards about how the magician felt what went well and what could have been improved upon. I think these would be very beneficial to many of us. I don't know if this is even possible for you but I'm sure others may like this as well.

    Magic - Mentalism

I agree with Danny on this one. Who cares what other people have done. Why does everyone have to follow the same path that has been traveled? Be unique and make it work. People would love mentalism and magic in the same performance. Good luck and let us know.

How to carry magic for restaurants...

jrobarts05, Yes...that is the one I have that I think Chris will like. Many guys in my IBM Ring use it and for 25 bucks you can't beat it. The case is from Lowe's and the Cosmetic Black box was from Wal Mart. It was like 29 dollars. Here is mine and also the cosmetic case that looks opens with...

How to carry magic for restaurants...

Dizzi, I have done both and would venture to say that if you are just doing a one time shot thing at a restaraunt, then no you probably wouldn't carry in your case, you'd just load what you could on you. It is easy if you have a system to know which pocket everything has in it and put...

    Stage / Birthday Magic

I am glad you asked. I am going to use the first three phases / moves of Sanders Fiber Optics this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes. The kids will be age 6-11. I am only going to display the 3 different size ropes. Make them all change to the medium size. Disgard one in my pocket...

How to carry magic for restaurants...

Chris...I have had the Josh Jay Pro Carrier also. It does the job if you are only carrying spongeballs, a few gaffs, a few coins, a deck of cards and business cards. I sold mine well...I'll be honest...it looked kind of dorky / nerdy on my belt loop when I was performing.

    Stage / Birthday Magic

Birthday party magic can be fun and exciting or it can turn into the worst nightmare you've ever wanted. Luckily for me I have done 4 b-day parties very well and didn't have any hecklers....(knocks on wood) I have another birthday gig this Saturday. Here are a few of my tips. You probably...

How to carry magic for restaurants...

Chris, I bought a silver metal brief case at Home Depot. You can get them at Lowe's as well. It looks just like the ones that sell for $60-90 bucks at Daytona Magic. Mine only ran about $29.00 It has foam dividers, pockets for pens, thumb tips, sponge balls, business cards, etc. Check...

    Who Are You?

I know this may seem boring to some of you but I present myself as....da da dah....myself. I am a very likable guy who can make people laugh, feel good about themselves, and include everyone in the moment. I make everyone feel welcome and special during my performance. I do not mimic...

    Stage / Birthday Magic

Seriously...I cannot stop laughing at some of the recent posts. How about asking a specific question instead of just throwing a random / general topic up on the board? For example: What makes a child's birthday performance so challenging? or Where...

    Where Are We Advancing To?

For magic to advance I believe that many of the arm chair magicians / you tube only magicians need to get out and start doing magic for live audiences. They then need to start taking some constructive criticism to grow professionally. Even the best magicians around the world need to learn to be...
