I have been told that I should start reading books as there are gems in books not DVD's. I have been doing magic for 3 years and have been taken it very seriously for 1 year. I want a few advanced card magic books. So if you know of any really good card magic books please tell me.
Thank You,
Donald

I would recommend the Art of Astonishment books by Paul Harris.

They are far easier to read and understand than many of the older books such as Expert at the Card table so they would be a better introduction to learning from books.

Most of the material is suitable for an intermediate magician, it's not easy but is definitely attainable.

From watching your videos I don't really think you are ready for the more advanced books such as Expert Card Technique, you should work on some intermediate material first.

lol @ spelling. The Paper Engine, by Aaron Fisher, even?

Well, I don't feel like making any judgment on your skill per se - but, you asked for advanced stuff, By Forces Unseen is considered difficult.

The top three most important card books are The Royal Road to Card Magic, Expert at the Card Table, and Expert Card Technique, which I suggest should be studied in that order.

Then, I'd go for some classics like Dai Vernon's Inner Card Trilogy and Ultimate Secrets of Card Magic, and maybe some other Vernon stuff like Dai Vernon's Book of Magic, Select Secrets and Early Vernon. They've also re-released the Vernon Chronicles series, so I'd pick those up afterwards, as they've been out of print for a while so there'll be some stuff in there that not many people are familiar with.

If you want a quick fix of a huge amount of card material, then I'd go for Marlo's Revolutionary Card Technique and Cardially Yours. Those two together will keep you going for years.

As said above, with some additions:

- Stars of Magic: Recently reprinted, recieves outmost recommendation.
- Erdnase: Though not everyone's cup of tea at the beginning.
- The Vernon Book of Magic: Goes into Vernon's theory, and many of his class effects, cards/none-card, more material can be found in Inner Secrets triology, or Vernon's Chornicals.
- Marlo's work is a bit advanced and needs you to be fimilar and know your way with a deck of cards. This is mainly because Marlo's descriptions are usually technical and dry for many people's taste.
- Card College.
- Go into ANY website and browse the books section, look for reviews and decide for yourself.

Good luck :)

Session by Joshua Jay is not all card tricks, but does have some great ones. It's also a fantastic read- trust me, you will read it more than once... more than twice, if you're like me. :D
