i have been on the forums for a long time but never understood the red circle with the ! in it that appears next to thread titles what does it mean

If a thread, or a forum, has a red exclamation point next to it, it means that you have not yet seen the latest post in that thread/forum. It recognizes that you have seen the last post by you visiting the last page on any given thread, and then will disappear. In order to get the forum exclamation points to disappear, you must have no exclamation points on any thread within the first page of that forum.
