Hypnosis

Recently I've been reading about hypnosis and trying to learn how to do it successfully I searched a bit for a thread like this and didn't find anything so here it goes:

I know a lot of people here are into mentalism, however, I don't know if hypnosis goes along with that.

That being said, does hypnosis fall in line with mentalism?

Does anyone here practice hypnosis?

and can anyone recommend any good resources for hypnosis?

Thanks,
Joe

I do a fair bit if hypnosis and a large amount of mentalism. I personally think that they go very well together as the audiences believe that hypnosis is on some level real. However they don't really understand it but the can accept it. In my opinion that is what mentalism is aswell, atleast it should be. Derren uses a lot of hypnotic technequies to give effects some back story even though most involve something a lot more standard interms of method.

Oh Hypnosis...

I spent a good month with Anthony Jaquin's material, but just never really 'got it' I suppose. When I do some of the little mentalism I know, I do a faux hypnosis. Like D ICE R said, Derren has mastered the use of this and it helps add to the effect tenfold.

I love to quote Jason England on this subject, "In short, I think hypnosis is 98% B.S. and 2% science."

If you want to practice hypnosis, this is quite a good way to do it with no chance of failure. Actually hypnotize somebody; if it works, great. If not, it still appears to.
The thing with hypnosis is you will fail a fair bit in the beginning, everybody does. If you just stick with it however, you will get it.

I've never incorporated hypnosis into my actual shows, I've only ever done it casually to my friends, but have been contemplating finding a place for it in my routine quite bit recently. I'd also recommend Reality is Plastic by Anthony Jaquin, and have heard nothing but good stuff about The Manchurian Approach.

Robert,

Why don't you contact Anthony yourself? I'm sure he'd be happy to help, and I've heard that he's a very friendly guy with his time and his material when able. I've heard nothing but praise for his work.

Oh, I've contacted Anthony and everything, I just wasn't into it :p

I had a wild misconception of what Hypnosis was, and when I watched through all of his stuff, and read his book, I just wasn't satisfied (not with his material, but with Hypnotism itself). Although, I do like to incorporate faux hypnotism haha.

I love mentalism, but it just doesn't fit my style unfortunately :\. My personality is fun, and interactive, and I feel mentalism needs a more serious approach to be taken seriously.

These are all my opinions of course! :D

C.J. Johnson does a great comedy hypnosis act :) Don't quit on it just yet. Make it work, it's not impossible.

Robert, I see your point, that's fair enough - if you're just not into it, it's not something you can force.

Unfortunately, a great deal of mentalism and hypnotism is shrouded in misconceptions - very rarely does anyone just starting understand what it's truly about. This was certainly true of me. Much of the time you just have people performing Derren Brown card tricks and calling it "mentalism".

I will say this though - mentalism often requires a more serious approach, but not necessarily, and even so, it doesn't necessarily imply a serious performance or character!
