# Riddle of the Day :: Dividing the Deck Into Stacks

Riddle of the day: You are BLIND. You are given 52 cards: 42 face down, 10 face up. How do you divide the deck into two stacks with an equal number of face UP cards? Remember, you cannot see.

Take the 10 off and then count 16 more cards and turn them upside down and place them on the pack of ten.

Count out ten cards onto a table and flip this pack of ten cards over. Both piles will have the same number of face up cards.

Use the impromptu borrowed deck version of Colorblind that doesn't use the two/four gimmicked methods to it on the DVD, if something's been done to the deck (same principle as the impromptu version, for those that own it). If the top 10 cards are face up, simply count them onto the table, then count 16 more out and flip them over and square, then release other deck face-up onto the table. If scattered throughout the deck, read first sentence. Really just buy Colorblind, it's legit.

But what if you deal a face up card?

I would use a stripper deck..............

Here's how it works. There are ten face up cards in the deck. When you count out ten cards to the table, you will get X number of face cards in those ten. So, there will be 10 - X cards left in the remaining 42 cards. Let's say it was 3 face up cards counted in the ten dealt to the table, that would leave 7 in the remaining 42 cards. If 3 of the 10 cards counted are face up, then seven are face down. When the pile of ten is flipped over, you now have seven face up cards in the pile of ten and in the pile of 42.

Using your sense of touch, you feel which ten cards are curved in the opposite direction of the others, obviously because they are facing the opposite direction. Place those ten cards face-up to onto the table. The rest of the cards are now face-down, so deal down 16 more cards, flipping them face-up onto the face-up pile already on the table. Place the remaining 26 cards next to the face-up pile, thus having two equal piles: one face-up, the other face-down, and both with 26 cards.

Deal the cards into two equal piles, but turn each card over!

Assume:
52 cards
10 face up
location of face up cards is unknown.

Lift at the deck, the natural bend in the cards will automatically pick up everything above the 10 face up cards (signified X). Place the X pack to the side.

Deal off 10 cards from the other (signified Y) pack. Turn these cards over and place them on either stack.

You now have 52 face down cards divided with an unknown number of cards in each pack, however no face up cards. Therefore, they both have the same amount of face up cards. Alternatively, turn both of the top cards of the Y and X pack over so you have 1 in each pack.

if the face up cards start on top, you can faro shuffle them 5 times and divide them in half

If the face up cards are all in one place then Id do this.
1. Use the natural break to separate face up from face down, then turn over 16 more cards and deal them on the smaller pile i.e the face up pile.

If they're in different places then,

Id move my wrist 180 degrees as if i was doing a Two handed pirouette, If the card spins, that means its face up, if it doesn't its face down, Once ive separated the face down cards, i'll deal 16 more cards on top of the 10 face up ones already on the table.

One assumption I take is the face up cards are distributed with through shuffling with no markings or bridges so it is safe to assume that in half the deck there are 5 face up cards not necessarily in equal order so count 26 cards off the deck which is face up or face down. In each hand there will be 21 face down and 5 face up. Simply turn over the cards in one your hands there will be two stacks which between them will have 26 face up and 26 face down.

you could also try to work with chance. if the deck is shuffled enough. the 10 cards should be spaced out relatively evenly, so if you just cut the deck in half. there should be 5 in each one. thats not fool proof tho.
