Hello,

I've decided to give stage magic a chance. I really like it. Well I would appreciate any advices really.
I have been thinking to start with Rings, Ropes, TTs, maybe even card manipulation.

Well I would like to ask you guys if you could tell me about any DVDs I should buy to start learning?

B.T.W. I already know about Encyclopedia of Thumb Tip Magic and a Fiber optics extended. However I can not find Fiber Optics The essentials anywhere. I looked in every magic shop I know.

Thank you for forward help.

I believe the stage magic section of the Tarbell course is reputed to be excellent for beginners, not that I do or have done stage magic. I'm sure someone a bit more knowledgeable will add to this.

Thank you. I will check that.
Any thoughts on Fiber optics the essential by Richard Sanders?

Ok, here's a list of inexpensive resources that can get you moving forward, most of which were "standards" back in the day and all of it can be found through Hades Publications. Here's a few titles you should look for though;

The Art of Escape - Volume 7
The Thumb Tie by John Novak

Cord-Ially Yours by Ronald J. Dayton

Fred Kaps
compiled by Freddie Jelsma edited by Stephen Minch

The Funniest Magic Show in the World by Al Lampkin

Jenny-U-Wan Magic Part One: Silks-N-Ropes-N-Rings
by Ronald J. Dayton

Jenny-U-Wan Magic Part Two: Tissues-N-Money
by Ronald J. Dayton

Loopy Loop by George Blake

There are also books on constructing an act, stage make-up, larger scaled magic for stage and the business side of the craft, which you will need when it comes to marketing yourself.

Hope this helps.

Thank you a lot Craig. Yeah it helped. I'll check all of it and see what I can afford.

But still no clue on Fiber optics The essentials (Richard Sander)?

Penguin sells fiber optics.

If youre interested in card manipulation, the Sheridan course in card manipulation is pretty good, and Lukas' pair of Artist dvds are great on manipulation.

Depends what kind of stage magic you wanna do? Manip, comedy, illusions, classics, generic etc.

I would recommend a couple of books as well. Maximum Entertainment by Ken Weber is very popular for this subject and more modern than Fitzkee. I personally like Foundations : The Art of Stage Magic by Eberhard Riese. Of course the best way to learn is just get out there and do it.

You can have all the tools in the world, but without knowledge you can't build anything.

Actually, I have been into magic for only 9 months now, so I don't really know much about stage.

But I was thinking that first I would do Linking rings and Ropes. Most probably with just music and no speaking, just performing

You seem pretty set on what you want to do already without asking for our advice. That's a good thing, as you have an idea of what you think you can do. You also need to work out (and this is a major one) whether for these acts you will perform them silently, to music or you will talk. Any of these are fine, and you don't have to be a silent magician or talking magician throughout all of your acts, you can chop and change. You also need to figure out how long you want your set to be. Is it just going to be a quick 5 minutes or are you wanting it to be a 10-15, or maybe a 30 minute show. Either way, the sooner you can work out how long you want to do, the sooner you can get an idea for how much material you need for your show

Simon is correct with his observation and I'll take things a bit further here; if you like the Linking Rings for example, look them up on You Tube and study the various forms of performance. If you want to go with just music then take a look at Richard Ross or even Vernon and John Penndragon. I believe there are some old timers on video now days as well, so look under "Chalet School of Magic" and you'll find some great (as well as some horrid) examples.

Rope Magic can have it's difficulties when it comes to finding material, I listed the handful of books that I'm aware of but you may also study the earlier books by Dick Zimmerman re: is Chord & Ring effect (and linking Hula-Hoops). There are some curious bits of fun using a length of rope in conjunction with Invisible Thread and thread & reel hook-ups, much of which borrows from the Silk Magic arsenal but nothing is funnier to kids than a run-away rope that seems to taunt and pick-on the magician.

Reluctantly I would also point you to LINKED by Nefesch. . . it's a very strong bit of Mentalism but I can see variants in presentation that would make for some fun "Mental Magic".

Thanks again for help.
I have just received rope and dvd for rings. I just can't wait to get my rings! I will also get Fiber optics by Richard when I master the basics of rope magic. My friend gave me his dvd when he was just a begginer in rope magic.

I will start practicing as soon as I can. Thanks again for all the help. You are the best, guys!
