Studying Advice...I need some serious help

I asked this in another forum, and just wanted another set of opinions. I have been out of magic for a few years now, and am just now getting back into it more seriously, and when I was in it before, I didn't know much. Recently I had started to read through the Royal Road, and have purchased quite a bit of DVDs and effects, which I know is bad, because that's what I used to do, and I either would watch the DVD and not put the effort into it, or I would do it, and only perform it a couple of times and then forget about it, etc.

I was told by certain people to put down the Royal Road and to pick up Mark Wilson's Magic Course, I recently purchased this book on my magic buying spree, and I also purchased Joshua Jay's Magic Course as well. I am going to put a lot of time and effort into learning from these books, but at the same time, I don't want to have to give up Cards, or learning new coin material. I understand that the reason they recommend I study Mark Wilson's Course is so that I get a good understanding of the fundamentals of magic, and sleight of hand, and I want to be a good sleight of hand artist, and magician, but I also want to study stuff that is outside the range of that book.

I am about half way through the Royal Road To Card Magic, and the advice I pretty much got was to put down my cards, and only study from Wilson's Magic Course. I don't want to be just a card magician, I want to be a good all around magician, who can do impromptu magic, and not have to worry about not having a deck of cards around, and I would also love to excel at coin magic as well.

I am more of a visual learning, and I prefer DVDs, but I understand that books help you come up with your own patter, and own presentation styles on how tricks are done, and I can appreciate that, but even with the Royal Road book, I own the 5 DVD Set with R. Paul Wilson, just so I have that extra visual aid/modern input.

I am pretty much looking for direction, and I am very indecisive at times, and also need help coming up with a schedule, and a study guide, on how to make the most of my time, without keeping on this path of buying effects that are beyond my skill level, or that I plain just don't need at this very moment in time. Below is a list of what I currently own;

Tool by David Stone, Dress Code, Banded by Garret Thomas, Color Changes by Jay Noblezada, SPONGE by Jay Noblezada, David Roth's Expert Coin Magic Made Easy 3 DVD set, The Royal Road to Card Magic 5 DVD Set with R. Paul Wilson, Bending the Real by Jay Sankey, On the Spot by Greg Wilson, Metal by Eric Jones, Touch by Hanson Chien, and GREED by Danny Garcia, Invisible by Oz Pearlman, and Stripper by Oz Pearlman, Mark Wilson's Course in Magic, and Joshua Jay's Magic Course. (keep in mind almost half of this came from penguin magic's "5 for $99" deal)

As you can see, I own a lot of stuff, yet I can't perform most of it, and one of the main reasons why is because...impulsive is one of them, but the main reason why is that I am horrible with coming up with a schedule to study most of it, and also I seem to want to jump onto something new. I want to put an end to this, and that is why I came here today to ask you guys for your help. If you are still reading this so far I appreciate your time, and apologize for such a long post.

I pretty much need a kind soul out there to help me come up with a personal study guide/schedule to help me actually become a good magician, instead of a collector of magic effects. Thanks for your time.

Yeah, I want to do strolling magic I guess, or more street magic type stuff. I'm not really into fancy stage magic, maybe later down the road, but I just want impromptu, stunning magic. Cards, coins, rubber bands, etc. but to be honest with you the last thing I need right now is another DVD lol

Well, it's simple in fact: get your priority clear. What I mean is, like you should already know, you can't do everything at once. You need to focus on what you really want to learn. How do you do that? Well, you need to know what you really want to do first. Take time to think about what you want to achieve with that. Do you want to go pro or just to entertain people you know? Just knowing that will tell you how many hours/day you should practice. Knowing the why is more important than anything.Second thing, find someone (a mentor(s)) who you want to learn from and ask him (them) for advice. For example, I want to learn poker demo only to entertain people around me and don't want to make a living from it.I also want to do some card magic. I asked Jason england some advice and he tell me that I should get the basic of magic and after learn more poker stuff. He tell me to begin with push off second deal and center deal rigth away even if it's hard. He suggest me to learn from the College card serie volume 1 and 2 and after begin my specialisation on poker. After you know clearly what you want to do and why, it's easier to free some schedule for your practice. And if you can't follow your schedule, there is only 2 option: change your priority or change what you want to become.Goal are not set to be achieve but to mesure if you're going the way you really want to go. It is not mesure on success and failure, only on how fast you're progressing.

I hope this will help you and sorry for my english, it's not my main language.

Well, being a Pro some day would be awesome, but for now I am just doing it as a hobby, and possibly if I get good enough later on, go Semi-Pro. I really card magic, and I also enjoy coin magic, If I could I would do coin magic effects like "AUDIO" by Eric Jones, but the big difference between card magic, and coin magic, is that you could pick up a card book, for instance, Royal Road, and be doing a trick on the sleight you learned by the end of the chapter that same day. On the other hand, with coin magic, you couldn't pick up BoBo's and expect to be doing a coins across routine that same day, let alone that same week/month.

When I am at work, I've been practicing my classic palm, and finger palming techniques, so I hope to get enough of the basic sleights under my belt to be able to do a few basic coin tricks. Also, I can apply Sponge ball magic to coins, and vice versa, which is really nice. I know only one thing right now, is that I am going to listen to my gut, and finish the Royal Road to Card Magic, and at least complete one thing, at least that way I'll be able to perform fundamental sleights with cards. I will then pick another area to study, maybe coins/sponge balls, and that way I can practice the sleights at work, or on the go. Then maybe pick 1-3 tricks out of Mark Wilson's Magic Course (depending on difficulty) and master at least 1 trick a week.

Hey, maybe I am on the way to a decent study plan? Let me know what you guys think and if you have any input/advice, thanks!

Bending,
I was just like you about 2 years ago. I had SOOOOO much stuff I didn't even know where to begin because I am a very bad impulsive buyer as well. Many times it was just because I "had" to know how the effect worked because it just fooled the crap out of me or I trully saw myself performing "said" effect and blowing people's minds.

My suggestion at this point in time would be for you to work on 1 set of 3 or 4 effects...each one being different. You may have a rubberband effect then a coin trick from metal, then a spongeball routine from Jay's disc, then a nice card effect from Royal Road.
Get this set down like the back of your hand...do not...work on other material! Perform Perform Perform that set EVERYWHERE you go and to whomever will watch. Try to use the same patter (it will develop more and more as you get through many performances) over and over.

After that you will want to develop a second set of 3-4 effects in a similar manner. Then make a 3rd set. You now have a strolling show that should be strong and well rehearsed ready for a potential client.

This is exactly what I did and it has done wonders for me. I hope it helps.

As far as a set schedule...that is a big no no for me because I am married with kids and work full time as a teacher. Every one of those comes first above and beyond my magic so I have learned to do my practicing in the late evening when everyone is in bed.

I would recommend you studying routines instead of a lot of tricks. Create your own card routine (ACR, Sandwich...) and perform it everytime. Once you've learnt it 101% start with coins, sponges... However you want, but please, don't learn 3 tricks of 30 seconds... Those are good for table-hopping, but if you want to do street magic, ROUTINES ARE THE KEY!

Thanks for the advice guys! I'm going to study the Royal Road to Card Magic and concentrate on a few simple tricks with the glide, and also the ACR routine. I am also going to practice a lot with SPONGE by Jay Noblezada, and the sponge ball magic part of Mark Wilson's Course in Magic, and the great thing about Jay Noblezada's DVD is that all the parts he teaches you are from the same routine that he uses. Also, while learning Sponge Ball Magic, I'll start going through METAL, and David Roth's Expert Coin Magic DVDs to practice my sleights, and by the time I have a good routine going with my cards and sponge balls, then I'll be ready to tackle some coin stuff. Thanks for all the helpful advice on routining, this really helped me out a lot and set me on the right track, thanks again!

The best advice I can give is to make one day a week: performance day.

You already have a ton of material, you now just need motivation to learn it. How can you do that? Accountability. And what's that? Well, that's telling as many people as possible, that if they see you on a Wednesday, or whatever, they need to ask you to perform 1 magic trick for them, and 1 only. Some weeks it'll be super quick, and other times it might be more elaborate.

Even if it's just for your parents, and even if you just work your way through Royal Road one trick at a time, you'll be a better magician than you've ever thought possible.

All my best,
