Thought I'd introduce myself here...

Hey Theory11,

I'm MovementManipulation (though you probably figured that part out). I'm 17, and I practice in sleight of hand and cardistry.

Foremost, I'll explain my slightly nonsensical username. It stems from a quote I heard or read somewhere on the subject of sleights that just stuck out to me:

"Sleight of hand is complete control, the manipulation of movement, ......" It continued on, but this part just summed up magic for me. I won't get too philosophical in this thread, but I thought it was a good way to describe skill in the art.

Quick little about me:
  • I've been practicing for about a year now, maybe less. I'm very new to magic but I practice like a madman and I've had a deck of cards on my person at all times for going on 9 months.
  • First got into card manipulation after seeing the film Smokin' Aces a while back. The film itself was unimpressive, but the card flourishes that Dan and Dave performed floored me. Quickly bought the System, Trilogy, and some beginner DVDs and thus began the magic industry's steady absorption of all my money.

I joined Theory11 because it was one of the only sites that seemed to me to have the group of genuine thinkers that take magic seriously and do away with the David Blaine capitalizing, mess of multiplying sponge balls that I've commonly seen.

That's about it. I'm a writer so it was a chore to keep this as concise as possible without writing a two liner. Looking forward to being part of the forum. Peace.

Welcome, hope to see you around.

If there is only one piece of advice I can offer you, it is this: Don't ask about the Wire.

Thanks everyone,
I'll make sure not to :p

welcome to the forums.

By the way, I have massive respect for David Blaine. soooo it's not completely done away with ;)

Oh, I didn't mean I didn't have respect for him. I'm a huge fan of him (I just read his book last week, fantastic read). What I meant was I've seen too many sites and products that label themselves as you TOO can be like David Blaine, or DO SUPER HIP-AWESOME-DOWN TRICKS ON THE STREET LIKE DAVID BLAINE DAWG.

I think the majority of magicians, illusionists, etc. were influenced by David Blaine in one way or another, but the pure capitalization on his name to sell a cheap product makes me wince. To clarify further, I don't have problems with great tricks like LIT that say something like AS USED BY DAVID BLAINE ON VERTIGO or something thats simply true. It's the more.....generic products that just seem sad to me.

But I like multiplying sponge balls...:(

Welcome,

The 'buy buy buy!' bug usually goes away after a while in magic (or lack of money..) and that's when you should take a look at everything you've bought again. If you want to do flourishes, or serious manipulation, you can check out the 'cardistry' section of the forums.

If you want to learn magic too, then buy some books. Just use the search button and you can find all kinds of lists of recommended books.

As for 'you too can be like david blaine' ...it's a damn good way to sell a hell of a lot of product to people who will only do magic for 6 months or less. Just sayin'.

Hope you have fun and stick around, this place is usually buzzing with some sort of excitement, even if it's arguments over something irrelevant to original thread topics...
