Daring to Dream the Impossible

Hi guys,

Long time no see. I haven't been on these forums for ages, reason being I was working on a cruise ship as a Fitness Instructor, and part time close-up magician. But now I'm back, so all is good :)

I would like to make my comeback with a motivational essay, that will hopefully lift your spirits up, and realize that nothing is impossible (we as a magicians should already know that ;) ). I used some examples from the world of Sport, as that world is also close to me, and best one to describe. I tried to put some correlations to magic, so I hope you will understand what I was trying to say. Enjoy...

Daring to Dream the Impossible

After finishing fourth in the 1952 Olympics, just out of medal contention, in the 1500 meters, an unknown British track athlete set a new goal. A goal that according to many was not only incredibly high, but humanly impossible. At the time, no one had ever run a sub-4 minute mile. No one! In fact, many authorities said it simply wasn't humanly possible. But the runner didn't seem to care or pay attention to the hundreds of people who told him he was wasting his time and that it could never be done. His goal was to break 4 minutes and in a 1954, just 2 years after he failed to even gain a medal at the Olympics, he ran faster than any human before, he did the impossible and broke the 4 minute mark. His name was Roger Bannister and he will be remembered forever as proving "impossible" wrong.

Now this story is amazing enough, most people who fail in something would give up. Not only did Roger NOT give up but he went on to set a new goal of not just winning but of defying belief. It gets more interesting if you look at what has happened since that time. Thousands of other runners have now run the mile in less than 4 minutes, and what's most interesting is that the sub-4 minute times came streaming in from all over the world within weeks of Rogers record braking results. If so many people were able to get this result why then had no one ever accomplished it before? For years and years, not a single person, was able to do it. Was it because they lacked ability? NO.

Nothing magical happened in 1954 to make human beings instantly faster. The limitation was 100% mental. All the other runners, including those that were faster than Roger simply believed it could not be done and so... they never did it. It took someone like Roger who wouldn't pay attention to what others thought was possible or impossible to remove that limit and then because everyone saw it was possible they suddenly were able to accomplish it.

So what does this mean to me and my magic?

First things first - NOTHING is impossible unless you believe its impossible. If Roger thought the 4 minute mile was impossible he would never have been able to beat it. If you believe that it's impossible for you to be a famous magician millionaire, or be on TV, or do a stage show in Las Vegas, then it simply is.

Secondly, who cares if you have failed in the past - your failures don't define you unless you let them. It has been proven that you can fail and than come back and break all records. I don't care if the magician in your magic club has been doing magic longer than you and never got anywhere, that doesn't mean a thing. You have the ability to not only be famous, but to be legendary. I don't care if no one else is able to do it. Thousands of runners had failed before Roger, but he didn't care. His peers who were faster than him had never been able to beat 4 minutes themselves and told him he could never do it because they couldn't do it. Do you know anyone like this in you magic club/forum? Anyone who is not making money and is not getting famous, and because they are not making money they have told you that you wont be able to either... forget them, don't let them talk you into failure.

Thirdly, don't wait for someone else to show you how to do it. I have met a lot of magicians who taught working for $200 a week in a local bar was good because they were at the top in their magic club. Big deal. When I showed them that I was making 3 times more per day, every day, suddenly the $200 doesn't look so good and a $400 target seem more achievable because someone else has done it. You know what they say to me "I just need to see someone do it, I can do it if I just see them do it", like touching these mythical creatures will have some magically transferal of ability and suddenly they will be amazing...yeah right. Touching or seeing someone will not make you better. They have no magical powers or secret formulas. They just believe and therefore they can.

So what do I need to do now?

So I've put together an action plan to help you with all of the above. If you put it in place I 100% absolutely guarantee that you will make more money. Are you ready?

1. Stop telling yourself you can't.
2. Stop listening to others who tell you you can't.
3. Stop waiting for someone else to prove it to you.

There are people all over the world who have dared to dream the impossible. Many of them have failed hundreds, if not thousands of times in their quest, but finally they got there through hard work and perseverance.

Dare yourself to dream the impossible and I'll see you on stage in Vegas.

... From above.

How To Win

Success is relative. That is to say what I see as success you may see as failure and vice versa, and that is ok. However, in order to access the success in some mode we have to set parameters, boundaries, targets and goals. We do it everyday without realizing, some do it on a long term basis, a five year plan, a new years resolution, a 'to do list' and we strategize about how we are going to get there. Others live for the moment, and set goals minute by minute, hour by hour, not really knowing whether they will win or lose and not really caring, for the next minute will bring a fresh challenge.

For much of my life I have studied why certain people succeed and others fail, and winners have certain traits that can be defined. The purpose of this essay today is not to make anyone feel inadequate or like a failure, but to get everyone thinking about the way they set goals and what parameters they have set for themselves, not just in magic but in life in general. What makes winners the way they are.

I have chosen three case studies for you all from very different backgrounds, but all with the same outcome, success. And to make it easier to understand, I've made them all sportsmen.

Michael Jordan: Basketball

Achievements: Six-time NBA champion (1991-93, 1996-98); MVP (1988, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1998); 10-time ALL-NBA First Team (1987-93, 1996-98); All-NBA Second Team (1985); Defensive player of the year (1988); Nine-time All-Defensive First Team (1988-93, 1996-98); Rookie of the year (1985); 14-time All-Star; All-Star MVP (1988, 1996, 1998); One of 50 greatest players in NBA history (1996); Olympic gold medalist (1984, 1992).

When asked what made him potentially the most successful sport star of the 90's, his response was very simple: "Every day I get up I ask more of myself than anyone else possibly could. In doing so I can't be disappointed or jealous of anyone else but myself, because I don't compete with others, I only compete against myself. I don't need someone else telling me I've done wrong, I've not stepped up, I know myself, because my personal standards are higher than that of anyone else in my sport. I truly believe that people hold back from exercising their true potential, they get comfortable just turning up, being average and never look to exceed, but hey if everybody was like me it would make being me even harder. So in that way I'm lucky."

He went on to say "One of my favorite sayings is "Failure is not falling down, it is the not getting back up again". When pushed to ask how he interpreted this statement he said that he related it back to his freshman year at North Carolina, a skinny kid, with not a huge amount of talent. He admits that at that age others had more talent than him, that to others the game came more naturally, physically they could offer more. He continues to add that had he listened to the advice of some of his friends he would have given up, and would probably have be an accountant or lawyer, but instead he choose the hard route, the road less traveled and set about bettering himself day by day, month by month. By the end of the year he hit the winning shot in the NCAA championship and his life has never been the same. 6 NBA titles and 4 MVP's later, he is now retired. When he looks back on his achievements he is very humble he says "Anyone could have done what I did, I just wanted it more".

Tiger Woods: Golf

Achievements: 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2005 Masters Tournaments, 1999,2000 and 2006 PGA Championships, 2000 and 2002 U.S. Open Championships, and 2000, 2005 and 2006 British Open Championships. With his second Masters victory in 2001, Tiger became the first ever to hold all four professional major championships at the same time.

A superstar by the age of 4, when he appeared on the Bob Hope show hitting drivers of over a hundred yards, Tiger Woods has been at the center of the sporting world for the last 13 years. By winning his first Masters at the age of 21, Tiger became the youngest Master's champion ever.

When questioned about what made winning easy, he says it comes down to two things; preparation and heart. Preparation is the key to getting to the tee, having heart determines what you hit off the tee.

He says: "The harder I practice, the luckier I become".

"You have to be ready. I mean, you have to be, any event you go to, you have to be ready to win. If I'm ill-prepared, how do you expect to win? People have no idea how many hours you've got to log in to be prepared to win. It's a lot more than anyone thinks.

You've got to have the guts to get it done. You can have a picture perfect swing or you can have a range swing that looks great; you can put the club in every position. But can you pull the trigger when you have a 3 iron over water on the last hole and need to make 3? Can you do it? Well, that's when it comes down to what you have inside.

Picture perfect swings can work. It makes things a lot easier. But when it comes down to it, do you actually have the guts to get it done? Some people may or may not have it, and that's something you can't teach. Either you have it, or you don't".

Lance Armstrong: Cycling

Achievements: 7 times Tour de France winner, Cancer survivor.

Everyone knows who Lance Armstrong is, the guy who beat cancer and then came back to win 7 back to back Tour de Frances, one the most brutal sporting events in the world. Having read most of what has ever been written about Lance Armstrong you can't get away from his competitive nature and attention to detail. Year after year while his opponents traveled the world racing in different tours to prepare for the Tour de France, Lance would be in France riding and mapping the course stage by stage, riding and re-riding the same mountain, analyzing the ridges, where he could accelerate, where he had to hold back, meticulously planning how he would defeat his opponents. For anyone who has ever watched Armstrong race you immediately notice one thing, on the steepest climbs to the highest peaks when others are grimacing and hurting, Lance Armstrong shows no emotion, he may be hurting but he doesn't let anyone see it.

The End

I will leave it up to you to make connection between these amazing athletes, and what they did compared to you and what should you do with your magic.

Here are few more examples of "impossible":

Mr Bell and his "impossible" invention. The telephone.
Astronauts on the Moon, proving that the word "impossible" doesn't exist.
Edison and the "impossible" light bulb.

Thank you.
