For me I prefer books solely for the purpose of having something "tangible" in my hands where I am flipping pages and holding onto something. I know that sounds way off base ha ha, but just my preference. Plus I like to see all of my books on my shelf. It brings about a sense of pride/ownership...

I myself do not perform the pass or even use it; however my mentor always has taught me to use body motion (bigger motion to cover the small) Perhaps even extend your arms forward or back towards yourself while talking to the spectator when executing the move.

I will watch this later tonight when I am off work, but yes, almost all of today's material is just old effects from books only the effects are "dressed" differently if you will. I have found gems in old linking ring magazines from the 70's and 80's.

As Christopher has mentioned....if you do not do a good job on a long routine you will lose momentum and your audience will have less "buy" in on your next effect. I always try to "hook" my audience whether it be on stage or at a table in the first 30 seconds. That is about the length of time...
