    New Here

    To be perfectly honest, my recommendation is going to be to start with either Xtreme Beginnerz vol 1, which has a lot of material to keep you busy as well as a few finger fitness drills, or volume 1 of Jeff McBride's Art of Card Manipulation which covers many of the classic flourishes as well as...

    April 2009 :: Proudly Presenting

    Magicians underestimate children even more than audiences do. We like to imagine that the real secrets to our art are some arcane tradition passed down through the ages to only the worthy practitioners. Truth is, a monkey could do what we do. A clever young person can figure out how to...

    Has any magician thought like this before?

    I think the bigger problem is that everyone thinks these are the default standards by which all other manipulation and magic shall be judged. It's too early in the morning for me to start drinking. Maybe I'll get baked instead. They're only famous among magicians because magicians have...

    Money challenge

    Objects are limited to coins, paper money, cigarettes/cigars, and jewelry. I want people to think of manipulation artistry in broader terms here than simply cards. EDIT: Small update. Since some people may want to use real cigarettes, then lighters can be used as manipulation props as well.

    Good flourishes / tricks for a battle?

    This is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about. A real blend of visuals with music.

    Exalt of the Weird battle

    To counteract lower traffic, I'm asking those of you who are interested in this and would like to either compete in the challenge or see others compete to spread the word. Let people you think would be interested in this know about it. Even if they decide not to, get them to spread the word...

    Good flourishes / tricks for a battle?

    I get a mental image of a bill switch used to produce a flash bill that is then set on fire and used to conceal/reveal the production of a paper airplane when Roger sings "I'm in the high fidelity first-class traveling section, I think I need a Lear jet." End by grinning and tossing the paper...

    Exalt of the Weird battle

    If you can't find a partner to challenge, then go ahead and make the video anyway and post it to the media section for critique. The only way we're going to raise the bar around here is to increase the presence of people trying out new, exciting things.

    They sell them at most magic shops. Geoff Williams also has an interesting set-up for them in Miracles for Mortals volume 2 (great DVD set, by the way). Here's the link to the thread where I have formally issued the challenge. Remember guys, this is Money by Pink Floyd. I expect a level...

    Money challenge

    Yes, another one. Once again, I want to see two people compete with manipulation acts set to some great music. This time around, it's Money by Pink Floyd. Everybody knows that infectious bass groove and that wailing saxophone solo. What will you be using? I want to see a manipulation...

    Good flourishes / tricks for a battle?

    You don't even have to smoke the bloody thing. Novelty cigarettes have foil tips that shine like actual glowing cig cherries and have powder loaded into them so that you can puff out on them (don't breathe in for god's sake!) and create the illusion of smoke.

    Exalt of the Weird battle

    Your choice, though if you'd prefer to take the challenge outside of the actual contest, that's fine too. The book in question is about advanced performance theory, studying not only urban legends, but also Jungian psychology and early 20th century pulp literature. Part of the aim is also to...

    Mythology Battle

    I'm going to weigh in with my vote tomorrow after sleeping on it some. First impressions: Wrath, it might be my impression as an American, but your accent combined with the timbre of your voice and your appearance gives you a scholarly look that partially came across in your performance, but...

    Good flourishes / tricks for a battle?

    I get the mental image of a guy in a suit manipulating coins, backpalming $20 bills, and constantly vanishing and producing his cigarette. The bass groove really makes the mental image.

    Good flourishes / tricks for a battle?

    Click on the link he posted and find out. Everyone insists on posting their card manipulation videos to music, so here I'm asking people to use good music like Streetlight Manifesto and The Smiths. Hell, now that I think of it, somebody should do a coin/paper bill/cigarette manipulation...

    Good flourishes / tricks for a battle?

    New challenge to add to your list. I've always found the battle system to be tacky, but as long as it's here we should try and put it to some use. Rather than doing battles to show your ability to perform one card sleight, make a video I'd actually want to see.

    Business section of the site?

    We can only post so many good threads at a time. If we deluge the forums with our best, we'll burn out very quickly, and then it will be right back to having everything good shoved off the front page with more redundant exclamations of, "OMG!! I found D+M's hat at Hot Topic!!!1! Here's pics of...

    Exalt of the Weird battle

    Fresh new challenge, droogies. Later this month, I'll be releasing my second ebook and my first treatise on the performance of bizarre magic, Exalt of the Weird. The intent is to inject some different thinking into the genre while also bringing it up for a breath of commercial fresh air...

    April 2009 :: Proudly Presenting

    Case in point: Last weekend I was out at a bar with friends. I did a mind reading trick for a girl using only a key card and a swing cut. I schooled my face to a blank mask so that she could project any emotion she wanted onto me and slowly thumbed through the deck while staring directly into...

    Business section of the site?

    They won't because you can't expect them to voice what appears to be an unpopular opinion. They don't have enough spine to do that. A moot point because the sub-forum just isn't going to get made. The admins have already decided that this place isn't a guild for professional entertainers...
