Disturbing "effect" I just came across

I do seance magic. Believe me, I know about playing with fire.

Disturbing "effect" I just came across

It all comes down to motivation and audience. Shock magic exists because there are audiences who want to see it.

    Ellusionist Parody

This question has been on my mind a long time, and the video only reminded me of it. If people rail against certain dealers for stocking one-trick DVDs... how come they never take the creators to task for deciding to have the DVDs produced in the first place? Seriously, I've been wondering...

    Derren Brown is...

True, they are free to be ignorant boobs with an irrational fear of a non-issue. But that doesn't change the fact that homophobia is a thoroughly useless superstition that should have gone the way of believing gremlins infecting your brain causes insanity.

David Blaine is an independent film; Criss Angel is Hollywood

Consider also Harry Houdini's story. As a magician proper, he was pretty awful. But he consciously set about turning himself into a legend. Now his fame almost a century later eclipses that of all his contemporaries. David is slowly turning himself into a superhero.

David Blaine is an independent film; Criss Angel is Hollywood

Totally valid. But what about arguing who's the better performer/entertainer? And what will posterity remember better?

    Magical Myth Busters: Volume 2

Several things you've harped on were just my attempts at being glib or funny. Obviously, they didn't work as everyone still thinks I'm a robot.

    Magical Myth Busters: Volume 2

I don't actually. Actually, it happens here too. People get all whiny when their posts get edited for profanity, exposure, or attacking people and start crying about freedom of speech. I've had to deal with this problem whenever I disagree with somebody no matter where I am. If I tell...

David Blaine is an independent film; Criss Angel is Hollywood

Watch Supernatural and get back to me when you have a clue. No one has to like Criss as a person or even as an entertainer, but for love of George Romero, stop trying to be glib. Who are you all trying to impress?

David Blaine is an independent film; Criss Angel is Hollywood

Finally, somebody who can tell the difference. Roger Corman is an independent filmmaker (fanboy). The Cohen brothers not so much.

    Sigh...

I'm in no way trying to suggest I condone reverse engineering. But when you post videos of magic, there's a very real chance that people will try to pick it apart and figure out the method for themselves. If there are certain parts of a routine that are just plain bold or ballsy, it really...

    Magical Myth Busters: Volume 2

I'm speaking with him privately. It's a conversation I'd prefer not to have in public. He's half-right. I don't go to conventions because I don't have the money right now. Magic is my main income right now, but if you'll look at my web site, I'm trying to launch a multi-media studio. The...

David Blaine is an independent film; Criss Angel is Hollywood

Have you watched any of his early work? Before his ego became a sentient lifeform in its own right, he actually did some great stuff. I don't like the metaphor as I've learned the hard way that the line between mainstream and indie is rapidly fading and there's both gold and crap on both...

    Magical Myth Busters: Volume 2

I also get the impression that you think I'm kind of a prick in general, as I can't recall the last time you ever really spoke to me about... well, anything really. If I'm wrong about that, great. If I'm right, don't worry about offending me as I've been called far worse things for less.

    Magical Myth Busters: Volume 2

Technically, my stance is that it won't hurt your magic, provided of course you're willing to find a proper solution. No one I know says to give up. Just that attacking the problem directly seems like the intuitive, logical thing to do, but is also the least likely to succeed. Almost no...

    Sigh...

Fair enough. Although in some cases I'd be willing to watch a more tightly edited trailer if it meant not having to listen to every other brat kid bragging about how they reverse engineered the method from watching the video (remember when Fallen was released?). It still strikes me as...

That's the thing. Cameras aren't like the human eye. Humans have to focus on specific points of interest. Try this. Face whatever room you're in and move your eyes as far left as they'll go. Now try to smoothly move your eyes across the room to the far right. You can't do it smoothly...

What do you do when you mess up a trick?

Kenton Knepper's Kolossal Killer is the perfect out for such a situation. Just don't act like you made a mistake. Use KK as if that were the effect you intended all along. Other than that, there's plenty of outs. "There. Jack of Spades... I didn't say it was your card, I said it was the...

    Sigh...

Freedom of speech does not apply to privately owned messageboards. Remember that thread of mine you barged into earlier today just to take a shot at me? I addressed that very issue. A privately owned messageboard is legally considered the same as private property: you are subject to the...

    Sigh...

I'm just asking a few questions. No need to get so paranoid and hostile about it.
