How are you guys going to pull of magic / cheating in my room? I am the teacher and the magician. Silly kids. Ha Ha.

No cheating going on in my room.

In the not to distant future
I'm 98.7% sure that you don't get arrested. You can get in serious trouble and be banned from casinos, but not arrested. But, hey, I almost failed law back in high school.

Wow we have some harsh people in here....
Jesus christ guys, we're just sharing stories. I bet you everyone who has commented is not a complete lazy ass, and has most definetly studied their material before. Don't judge so quickly.

Please, can't people just be a little less up tight around here?

Last time I heard it was ruled in court as strategy. More than once.
Defense being you cant arrest someone for thinking. That it could only be declared as cheating when using an outside device.

Casinos can throw out whoever they want, for any reason. If they said you were cheating it could probably get you arrested, probably wouldnt hold up in court however.

Sorry but I have issues with people who pat them selves on the back for cheating.

You'll get no sympathy from me.

Of course you can get thrown out. Their house, their rules. The point was counting is not illegal and I said it isnt.
The cops have no jurisdiction in casinos as its private property or something.Casinos wouldnt take you to court as its not illegal and no evidence to back up "outside devices".
Casinos wont waste time in lowlife counters anyway. They throw you out and your done.

Hang on. This one is going to burn me all night until I get the answer. I'm going to make phone call into vegas, and settle this point once and for all.

If I end up eating my words then I'll have them with mustard and a side order of frys.

Should have cheated. ;)

But yeah, it's not illegal to count cards. Against the casino rules (seeing as it reduces the casino's odds of winning, and obviously raises yours), but not illegal. The worst that can happen is they kick you out and blacklist you. :)

Thats why I said "last time I heard.."
I actually researched into the issue a year ago. Whether it has been changed)and I hope not) I dont know.
Itd be f'ed up if they can take you to court for using ones head. As it IS strategy.

My guess is they would simply tell the police you were doing something illegal if they really wanted to get you arrested, it would probably work to.

If I was the casino,id find it way easier beating the guy to a pulp, blacklisting him and throwing him out.
Less paperwork.
Then again im brutal like that.

With a lack of proof, nothing would stick. And you could file a counter claim, because making false claims is illegal. :)

They'll also take you out in the back alley and mess you up with a pair of brass knuckles :p (Ok, not anymore)

Basically counting cards is a strategy, not cheating. Casinos can kick you out, but they can not arrest you.

The house always wins.

Here's the deal. While I wait for my vegas contact to get out of a show and call me back.

1) All gambling in vegas is regulated by the Federal Gaming Commission. Key word here is FEDERAL. So if you engage in fraudulent activity or illegal activity it's not a small infraction. This is of course assuming it is illegal.

2) It's not a your word vrs theirs. They have eyes in the sky, they have pit bosses, they have eyes, ears, and mics everywhere. I am sure they can document it.

3) to a lesser point back in the day when the mob still ran the town you'd only count once. You'd end up with a broken hand or knee. If you did it again, you'd end up in the desert, never seen again. Arguably, the town was better when the mob ran it.

I'll keep you posted once I get the offical word from Vegas on the matter.

They have equipment that can read your mind?

As far as I know (I could be wrong, of course), card counting is not against the law, but rather just against the "rules", thus only leading to being "escorted" out of the casino, and blacklisted (if they decide to go that far). The reason for this is because they can only ever "believe" you are counting, as it is done all in your head. However, if you use an outside device to help you count, or do it in a team fashion (signaling to others, for example), then that is illegal (and they would no doubt have proof, given all of their surveillance equipment). :)
