An Essay on the Modern Magic Community.

unfortunately, the only people interested in talking about these things are people who are advanced/experienced. To the newbie, they aren't interested in advancing our art. It isn't even theirs yet! So they still have to get past the stage of wanting to be able to impress their friends so they think they are cool or something. I mean, I'm pretty sure we all went through that stage.

And because there are more and more newcomers as each day progresses, there is a never-ending cycle of maturing within our art. So i guess we just need to be tolerable.... or have a t11 forum section for advanced magicians interested in presentation theories, advanced technique discussion, and all that jazz, where the best of would be posted in the other section for the newbies to learn from, alas, I digress.

oh well... in a perfect world

Cliffordton, Cliffordton, Cliffordton:

AN ESSAY ON THE MORALITY AND HABITS OF THE MODERN MAGIC COMMUNITY
(at least, as it pertains to the online community on Theory11)

:) Someone's been lazy, haha. Or probably just tired, since you're sleeping now. Text you tomorrow, have something fantabulous to show you on iChat.

Hahaha I was referring to your other post where you said " As I see it, the true "magic" is crumbling (at least in the online community - which is a huge tragedy)"

If by that you meant the community you spoke of in the original post.. yea I didn't connect the dots :D hahaha

“Let’s film our magic!” Alright, I am wholeheartedly in love with filming performances. But recently (and personally, I believe this came about because of the uprise in flourishing), there are mostly only videos of performances to the camera, not to an audience. I ask myself - what are these kids doing? What is the point in wasting hours and hours, days, months, years in the art of magic if you aren’t going to go out in the real world and perform? No one is impressed by a webcam.

If this were the case for the majority of camera-only performances of tricks, I would have no spark with which to light a flame of contest with the massive about of videos submitted to T11/YouTube. I see exactly where you're coming from, and I do this myself as well - though for a very select audience (private videos). Brainstorming via videos on the internet is a great way to grow in magic, and I support that side of the camera-only performances.

The reason I have a problem with most of the camera performances is because they are NOT posted for critique on an idea, nor for feedback on the mechanics of sleights, nor to show an overall performance of the trick so as to obtain the opinion of people before performing it in the real world. Most of the videos that are uploaded are patter-less, filled with music, unoriginal ideas, boring performances of "the newest cool trick", etc.

I'm going to begin with the topic of maturity. I remember when I first joined Theory11 - I was welcomed by a group of friendly, helpful people. When I wanted to talk with other magicians on as real of a level as you can get via the internet, I would simply open my browser and go to the forums. It saddens, and on some level angers, me that the forums are now flooded with a bunch of repeated nonsense and/or argument-inducing posts, along with the multiple posts on the same subject, the retarded replies left by Theory11's members, and the overall lack of intelligence and respect shown in the posts. I think that each member, old or new, needs to take a good look at themselves and re-evaluate their decisions and attitude. I would love to see, instead of the normal bashing and utter incompetence shown on these boards, positive replies and constructive criticism - along with answers to questions that you can answer, and not replying to posts that you have nothing constructive or helpful to say.

This is very true. When I first joined these forums I was impressed by the amount of posts per day. Way more than the Ellusionist forums which is where I was before. However I started to look through some of the posts and noticed that about half of them were, "That's what she saids."

Someone else said this, but I feel that it's important to say again. I like having videos of my magic to see how I'm moving along with that new sleight. Sometimes, when I think that it's good enough, I post on either T11 or E for feedback before I perform it. I would love to have lots of performance videos, but I usually don't have time to hit the streets or my mom doesn't want to be filmed.

However, you are totally right that magic should be performed for people.

I'm bringing this back to the top again, because as anyone who can read usernames can see, I am now back, and after glancing over the General Discussion board, I feel like some people need to read this.

So, just stumbled back onto the humble t11 forums and saw this and said to myself, " woah this conversation is still going on I think the last time I was on here was when I was writing on it!"

Been a while. I think an issue in this community, as well as life, is the need to be given some credit. And credit is given where credit is due, but with mostly everyone ultimately selfishly looking for props on the forums, maybe it shows that forums aren't the best way to advance the art of magic. Maybe it would be better if we all just started magic clubs and practiced with others instead of mirrors, I don't know!

anyway, this thread deserves a second read though. back after the break.
