you back yours up and give me proof.

The burden of proof is on you.

Thus far, I have not met a single person over the age of thirty who contradicted my assertion that no one in high school has their life together and figured everything out. They think they do, but they don't.

how do i give you proof that someone has their act together.

That's for you to figure out.

i'm done arguing. please have respect for everyone no matter how old they are.
-have peace and don't discriminate.
-jake

Respect is earned, not given. When you're older you'll figure that out.

Apparently you are done arguing because PC platitudes are the best you've been able to muster.

Anger motivates. Pity accomplishes nothing.

And if asserting that respect should be earned makes me an angry person, then just call me Rabies the Berserker. But I refuse to think that I or anyone else deserves respect just by the virtue of having squirmed out of our respective mother's birth canal.

In the not to distant future
Thus far, I have not met a single person over the age of thirty who contradicted my assertion that no one in high school has their life together and figured everything out. They think they do, but they don't.

that is very true. even people in there twenties don't have it completely together. the only difference is most of the time, we realize that.

again, please define, " has their life together".
-jake

First, I want to hear what you think it means. You claim to know people who do, so I want to know what definition you're using so I can tell whether or not it's worth my time and energy to continue this conversation.

they act in a mature resp........................................... thats about how far i got, then i thought forget this. i don't have to prove my beliefs to anyone but myself. i have already done that. you have your opinion and i have mine. and even if(as stated before by you) one of them is wrong, i don't see any proof from you. so i ask why do you deserve proof from me.

also, i am almost sure of this. no matter what evidence you or me come up with, it will change absolutely nothing in our beliefs on the subject. just a fuel to anger. and i do not believe that anger is equal to motivation. some great things may have come of it..........but many more have only lead to destruction(figurative, and literal) with no reason. anger clouds ones mind so that they can no longer see clearly in any direction but one. which can lead to good but more likely will lead to great suffering.

so i ask why do you deserve proof from me.

Because you contradicted me. I never verbally disagree with anyone unless I'm prepared to back everything up the instant I am asked to do so. You apparently do not have the same scruples. You disagreed with me, then ducked behind the word "opinion" as if it were a shield and blathered on about how you pity me for being angry and contrary. With a pompous attitude like that, you have no right reaching for the moral high ground.

also, i am almost sure of this. no matter what evidence you or me come up with, it will change absolutely nothing in our beliefs on the subject. just a fuel to anger.

In other words, you see no possible way I could be right about this to any extent. You think even less of my intelligence than I do of yours.

and i do not believe that anger is equal to motivation.

Your ignorance is not my problem.

some great things may have come of it..........but many more have only lead to destruction(figurative, and literal) with no reason. anger clouds ones mind so that they can no longer see clearly in any direction but one. which can lead to good but more likely will lead to great suffering.

Other people's lack of self-control is not my responsibility.

Regardless, you've proven me right anyway. Whether to positive or negative ends, anger is a motivating force. Motivation is neither inherently positive or negative, contrary to what you seem to believe. This is not an opinion, but a fact. What you do with it depends largely on whether or not you are in control of your emotions.

But I digress. You're not prepared to back up anything you say, therefore you're a waste of my time and shouldn't have opened your mouth in the first place.

if i'm a such a waste of your time than why are you still arguing. i know why.........it's our pride that makes anyone never want to be wrong. it's not you or me, it's everyone.
-i've actually gained alot of insight from this argument. (not from what you said or what i said but from the principles behind both of our ideas)
-thank you so much.
-jake (i find that looking on the bright side helps, it feels alot better than anger)

Rabies the Berserker is right. People by the time when they are 30, only thinks that they have it together. I mean, just remember what you did and what you thought few years ago. You probably thought then that you know everything, and yet you are laughing at yourself now for how little did you know back then. I'm 23 years old, have two jobs, and soon will earn about 1000$ a month (in a casino), and I don't think that I know everything or that I have my "act" together. There is so much more in life that is before me, and that I have no clue about...

About anger being motivation..... It is. Definitely not the best kind of motivation, but sadly the most common one...

The one thing I am certain of is that when I am in my 60s I will be looking back at my 40s and thinking how little I understood.

I can honestly say that in my opinion, Steerpike makes the most valid points in any argumentative thread on Theory 11. (except for one or two people I have in mind).

If you're going to discuss an issue with him, take the time and make the effort to actually quote him. He does this all the time and he makes a lot of sense with his post-quote analysis.

Now, I'm not going to take time out of my day to read the past 6 pages to see what this is all about. All I'm going to say is that if you are going to contradict Steerpike, do a damn good job by quoting him and then refuting his argument. Don't just sit there and talk nonsense. Prove your point.

That being said, Steerpike could be wrong on whatever the issue is. I'm just saying, the way he presents his argument is more clear and concise than anyone else...Go up to his level if you want to contradict what he's saying.
