I wouldn't consider "Through and Through" a geek effect. Geek in my opinion just know this is my interpretation is a stunt not geek "MAGIC." Geek magic looks real but isn't, "Through and Through" is a sideshow stunt big difference. I would even go as far as saying "Thread" Borders on sideshow stunt.

Excuse my noobishness, but what exactly is geek magic and why would you want to learn it instead of other stuff?

What! You have been shunned >.< That was sarcasm.
Geek magic is genre of magic where one does gross, strange, or disgusting things ie Drinking motor oil, tying razor blades to string in the mouth, etc. But even though it looks real, actually is not and uses deceptive methods to achieve the effect.

It gets a good response but most people are like (wholly crap.. That lady just drank that piss)...
its good that he want to get into geek effects/stunts in which you all may refer, now the problem with these effects is one must possess really good showmanship...quick wits, and a personality to match it with....as much as i like david blaine, his geek stunts just isn't him(to me, not you all maybe)...anyways...everyone does cards, everyone's into coins and such, but if you get a pure geek performer, the possibilities are endless...and if we really focus more and more into the sideshow styles, we'll find it that we have a vast number of material yet to be made or discovered....everyday i make sure i have at least 3 good geek stunts to pull off. Even if the spectator isn't into geek performances and find it weird, the thing is you will get a reaction whether it frightens, make them laugh, or just plain gross them out...reaction will come....
you mix in a bit of good pieces of magic on the side, you not only have name for yourself, this type of stuff build reputations....
i once did some good effect for a group of people....they were all impressed, but then this tougher crowd came to me and told me these exact words:
Dude we, know you are good with cards and Sh*t, I brought my girl to be scared out of her bra"
so i performed for them and the crowd went nuts.....in case you were wondering, i'm locally known as the guy who swallowed a roach......
you mix in a bit of good pieces of magic on the side, you not only have name for yourself, this type of stuff build reputations....

it was sleight of hand and a custom gimmick i created..lol......i'm not actually going around swallowing roaches, nor am i going around cutting my arms....just geek magic...
haha, now that i think about how i said it, i would sound a bit derranged wouldn't i????
A favourite of mine is balloon swallowing. it always gets great reactions, and a lot of comments about wishing the wife/girlfriend could do it.

I feel like a broken record. It's not like this is the first "geek magic" thread to have popped up on this forum, but in the interest of safety I'll repeat myself.
Geek magic is a sub-form of "magic" which is really a far younger tradition commonly known as sideshow. While newer effects have been added to the general roaster, geek magic draws up it's roots from stunts like sword swallowing, fire eating, oil drinking, eating glass, etc. Usually any "effect" that has serious shock, horror, and or potential bodily harm qualifies as geek magic.
Traditionally, geek magic is more stunt than tricks. Magic is a misnomer in the title of this sub-form. Magic tends to imply a trick, gaff, or secret move which by nature suggests a degree of safety that goes along with the effect. Perhaps that alone is where the illusion really is. Most geek effects are "what you see is what you get." Yes, you really swallow a sword, yes you really drive a nail into your skull, and yes you really CAN get hurt doing it.
In recent years such bizarre effects like razor swallowing, control, Russian roulette, saw, etc have made their way onto the scene, and offer a nice alternative to the much older effects typically see around the sideshow.
Since a lot of geek magic's most well known effects ARE dangerous (to a degree) I don't encourage, or advocate the learning of them from anyone else but a private instructor who has had years of experience performing these stunts safely them self. Trust me, a book isn't the best way to learn how to shove bbq skewers through your arms.

I agree, I never even thought of doing Human Blockhead without learning it from an Ex-sideshow guy. Even though still i am pretty afraid to do it with nails so i do it with cotton buds or anything of the like. That also gets me a gag or two about how i do not do it with nails, its just my style. I have done it with nails but i felt weird, and I could not even speak to the audience, i would just be still and scared, but cotton buds give me a bit more confidence, even though it is still pretty dangerous.
