I really would like to stay away from generic answers and stay towards more realistic goals that actually could advance this thing we call magic.
Advancing the art means developing something that could be used in everyday effects. I see people trying like Chris Brown with Venus Trap, highly angle sensitive, there are others trying to develop on some ideas that could actually replace techniques that we believe to be complete. So in a short answer, advancing magic is developing new techniques that could in hindsight replace old ones.
