What does your deck say about you?

I think the deck which would most suit my personality and performing style would be either ghosts or stingers. But I wouldn't know about the stingers, seeing as I STILL don't have them. Right Prae...????

my favoured deck for performances are pink ribbon bikes.
i'm not even kidding. My main presentation style is trying to make myself look as laidback and as relaxed as possible when i perform, i try to make it look like i haven't reheared the trick for hours on end. The pink just adds a flavour of spontanaeity to my presentation and my tricks.

I personally have been through every phase of decks a person can go through. A will post in chronological list format:
1)Free Casino Cards- Cheap, Cheap, Cheap
2)Flamboyant gimmick decks- Example: Clear Invisible deck; now were do you go after performing the Invisible card with a Clear deck.
3)Flamboyant Regular Deck- Black, Blue, Crazy designs you name it.....
4)Bicycle, Bicycle, and more Bicycle
5) The current trend is Bee Stingers- Simple, smooth, elegant. Kind of like I wish my magic was.

Props to the creator of this thread.

Thanks for listening

Very interesting post indeed : but I believe the title of the post is confusing some  .
As a mater of fact, I believe we should all have a different deck of card. Almost like the wizards at Hogwarts have customised styles of magic . In my humble opinion, I strongly believe the deck of card should be like your clothes. It should be a part of you, something you don't even look at when you perform, it shouldn't be something that you struggle to handle : it just should be a piece of yourself, something that should be used for one thing : help you deceive them.
You really shouldn't rely on it now. In fact, you should focus on the presentation of your magic instead of the mechanics of the trick (of course, you should have reached the perfection before performing).
And then, and only then, you will realise that the deck cannot does not need to be improved furthermore, but that you can improve your own presentation and that it will make you a better performer.

Hope you enjoyed the post, you know what you have to do it now

Definitely. That's exactly what a deck should be.

I apologise if this was the message that came out. Let me clarify something here:

This is not to say that a deck should be a substitute for anything. No amount of thinking about choice of deck will be a substitute for presentation. There are much more important factors than this. However, as mentioned above - it is something that will add to the effect, rather than make it.

Nah your message was crystal clear to me, I just believe it's the title of your topic that confused some. In fact, I was just trying to influence some of you with my strange formating :p

First off - good thread 5/5

Now I go for Bicycle Rider back Blue and Red... Because

1. They are good quility

2. They are cheap

3. You dont have to worry about the spectator holding them as you would with a good deck such as shadow masters as they are alot cheaper

4. They suit me

5. There good for all the cuts and shuffles i do

6. You can mix gaff cards with them from bicycl gaff decks

7. They last long

8. I like them

and if I like a deck then noone can change my mind :)

Yeah, you know what, I've given up on very many people understanding this thread. Anyone who's basically listed their favourite deck, like above, has missed the point entirely. Draven's post in the middle of this thread was probably the most concise summing up of the thread.

One thing I think is interesting is how some people I talked to were talking how certain decks just look suspicious and shouldn't be used with magic. I disagreed however they did make some valid points that even with a certain atmosphere on your character and type of magic that some spectators may be a bit curious about the deck.

I know what many of you are probably thinking, if you perform well then all attention should be directed at you not the deck and I completely agree. However a human being's curiosity can surpass their attention span in situations like this.

Just some food for thought. I still use a marked deck since I only have two card effects and the deck image serves little purpose. I find other materials for mentalism far more appealing.

Actually, I have a theory regarding this. I have a history of disagreeing, like you, with the whole suspicion thing, since I have never found it a problem myself using custom decks, but I've recently thought of something else which is very closely related to this topic, and which provides a reason for suspicion, which I think I shall write up soon in another thread.

Well here is my take on the entire thing deck:Image Ratio.

I use these when I am trying to convey a little bit more of a fantasy based character. The reason is for the non repetitious pictures on each card. Most of which depict images of dragons, elfs, Grim reapers, and the backs convey alchemic design which I personally find appealing. Yes like a banana.

Depending on what my mood is and what I am dressed in (They directly relate); I use the white bicycle deck backed cards, blue/red, etc whichever compliments my clothing. If I am wearing a lot of black I may use white or red backed cards. Wearing bright colors, I may lean toward the blue/black backed playing cards.

Personally when I feel like being smooth, I use bee back (no border) because the back design seems to flow together. With these cards I tend to be a bit more flashy, doing movements that I usually do not do with regular cards.

I truly hope this is what you were trying to convey Prae,

Silver

Awesome post, this has really given me something for me to think about.

I like Stingers btw. They're casual, like me, but they poke at you with mystery of the faded edges and I think that's a pretty nice combo.:D

Silver - YES, that's exactly it! Thanks for that, nice thoughts! :)

Bottom line: A deck can complement your magic. Anything that complements your magic reinforces your image and believability, with the ultimate result of a stronger effect, ideally.

Deffinitely the most interesting read in a long while.

I am a surfer and a snowboarder/outdoorsman. Using the greatest casino deck does nothing to parallel my personality. In fact, It hinders it greatly. I wear Sanuk Sandalsyear round as it it simply who I am. Using a black ghost deck would be attempting to put a square peg into a circle hole. In the past year, I found the deck to work with my personality. The earthy color blends with my style, the standard design makes them simplistic, and the feel is what I am used to. It is the Bicycle Eco Editions.

I never gave them much thought, other than when I saw them I thought, "those are me," until now. This thread has simply explained in language the mental processing that was going on upstairs unbeknownst to me. Just thought I'd share as I thought I picked up the meaning that you so brilliantly shared through this topic.

All the best,
-Chase

Cool thread, I was actually thinking about this the other day.
I usually wear some sort of hoodie and some normal jeans, and portray myself as a normal person, and therefore use Tally-ho fans, or normal bicycles.

If I happen to have a different style that day, meaning more dark clothes/light clothes I'll choose a different deck. I'll use Guardians for dark, and I usually stick with Fan backs for lighter colors.

I agree that different decks give spectators a different vibe about the performer.
They often take me more seriously if I'm using Guardians with the same self image.

However, I've found that even though I act the same, alot of the time the spectators will still react the same way and still become just as open with me as they would if I had another image.
Sorry if this didn't make sense.
Just my two cents.
